    Well, a lot of people have been wondering about the girl that talks at the beginning of Don't Stay's new intro. I did some research, and found out.

    The girl is Joan Baez, it's a sample of a poem by her called Gacela of the Dark Death. It was on her 1968 album Baptism. The lyrics to what LP used were like this:

    I want to sleep the dream of the apples
    To withdraw from the tumult of cemetries
    I want to sleep the dream of that child
    Who wanted to cut his heart on the high seas

    I don't want to hear again
    That the dead do not lose their blood
    That the putrid mouth goes on asking for water

    But all must know that I have not died
    There is a stable of gold in my lips
    I am the immense shadow
    Shadow of my tears

    I am the immense shadow
    Shadow of my tears

    I am the immense shadow
    Shadow of my tears

    Shadow of my tears

    Shadow of my tears

    Shadow of my tears

    Shadow of my tears

    The full poem is longer, here's the full lyrics:

    Gacela of the Dark Death

    I want to sleep the dream of the apples,
    to withdraw from the tumult of cemetries.
    I want to sleep the dream of that child
    who wanted to cut his heart on the high seas.

    I don't want to hear again that the dead do not lose their blood,
    that the putrid mouth goes on asking for water.
    I don't want to learn of the tortures of the grass,
    nor of the moon with a serpent's mouth
    that labors before dawn.

    I want to sleep awhile, awhile,
    a minute, a century;
    but all must know that I have not died;
    that there is a stable of gold in my lips;
    that I am the small friend of the West wing;
    that I am the intense shadows of my tears.

    Cover me at dawn with a veil,
    because dawn will throw fistfuls of ants at me,
    and wet with hard water my shoes
    so that the pincers of the scorpion slide.

    For I want to sleep the dream of the apples,
    to learn a lament that will cleanse me to earth;
    for I want to live with that dark child
    who wanted to cut his heart on the high seas

    Just solving one of the many mysteries of where LP gets their samples. :)

    EDIT:Since Brad is bitching at me about it, I will give him credit for discovering the original poem. :lol:

    The original is a poem by Federico García Lorca.

    Find out where that sample from "It's Going Down" came from. The "i knew i was being threatened" one.

    Yeah, I remember that name coming up when I searched, but Joan did the recording, the original was just a written poem.

    If you ask me, the It's Goin' Down girl sounds the same, maybe it's another thing Joan did.

    I'm thinking the same girl. The voice sounds almost identical.

    I'm pretty sure she's American, like the last name is clearly Latino but she was a Woodstock-era activist type singer, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, fit in with those type of people. Very political woman, very outspoken.

    Starting at the Download Festival shows in June, LP has been playing Don't Stay as the opener to their shows, with a new intro. Basically, this recording by Joan Baez plays a sample, which shortly is overlapped by the guitars and drums from Don't Stay starting and stopping again a few times, until the song starts.

    Most known for it's widely circulated intro in the Rock Am Ring 2004 show.

    Did they do this at the Meteora Tour at the beginning of the year because they had a new intro then, but I don't remember if there was a poem.

    Nope, Meteora world tour had like an instrumental breakbeat kinda thing that Joe scratched to. Also the tracklist was different, With You was the first song after the intro and Don't Stay was track #6

    I thought they've played "something I can never have" of the nine inch nails at the beginning of their show.

    WHY DOES EVERYONE SAY THAT!

    Unless I'm missing some remix of it, that is definitely NOT Something I Can Never Have. It's off the first NIN CD (Pretty Hate Machine) and appears again on Still. Am I missing something?

    They do play it before LP comes out, and they did at RAR 04. It's just the NIN version played over the PA though, LP didn't sing it. It's sorta like a mood-setting thing I guess, it fits pretty well as something to play before LP comes on.
