Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda is one of the amazing artists that will appear on Deftones' "Black Stallion", an upcoming collection of remixes to celebrate their seminal 2000 album "White Pony". Today, Deftones premieres Shinoda's contribution, a reworking of the fan-favourite "Passenger". This song, of course, features the vocal talents of A Perfect Circle's Maynard James Keenan, who duets throughout the track with Deftones vocalist Chino Moreno. Shinoda's remix is now available to check out on various platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

Deftones and Linkin Park share a lengthy history as friends and tourmates, not to mention as mutual fans, but the two camps have collaborated on music releases only sparsely throughout the years. Most recently, Chino Moreno appeared on Mike Shinoda's 2018 album "Post Traumatic", lending his signature vocals to "Lift Off". Linkin Park's spectacular 20th anniversary edition of "Hybrid Theory", released earlier this year, also includes live footage of the band covering "My Own Summer (Shove It)", a song from Deftones' 1998 album "Around The Fur".

Shinoda's take on "Passenger" largely leaves the vocals alone, but discards nearly all the instrumentation - in place of the jagged guitars at the foundation of the original song is an ambient electronica palette. The track opens with soft arpeggios and ominous whispers but this atmosphere is suddenly punctured with thick bass stabs for the chorus, matching the contrast in the singing. Shinoda also laces some dusty piano throughout the arrangement, particularly in the outro, and makes liberal use of vinyl crackle.

The 20th anniversary edition of "White Pony", which will include the "Black Stallion" remix album, will be released on December 11 and can be pre-ordered here. Other artists who have contributed remixes for the collection include Clams Casino, Purity Ring, Phantogram, DJ Shadow, and The Cure's Robert Smith.

In the meantime, a video for Mike Shinoda's "Passenger" remix, directed by Aaron Hymes, is due to premiere here at 2:12 AM EDT / 9:12 PM PDT on Saturday, November 14, as part of the Adult Swim Festival 2020 lineup.

Remixing a song with MJK on it—noice. :shifty:
edit: Honestly can't remember how the original sounded. That being said, I quite like the remix.

Kinda soured on Deftones after learning that Stephen Carpenter is both an anti vaxxer and a flat earther. I know, I know, separate the art from the artist but still, I find this fact incredibly troubling. It's one thing if a random Joe has these disturbing views but when someone that has a lot of money and influence shares them it makes them twice as dangerous, I find it very disturbing that even with the fame, and money Stephen couldn't find the time to educate himself properly with basic scientific knowledge.

As for Mike's remix of Passenger, I will listen to it later. I like the fact it is supposed to replace all instrumentation sand vocals.

I think the remix is ok. I like the dark production in the verses. It's tastefully minimal and lounge-y. However, the chorus goes in a different direction - it has a 2013-2014 era EDM sound in that section. Especially with the start-stop synth trope and flat digital drums. I feel that Mike could've done something more interesting and sophisticated with a White Pony track considering LP's and Deftones' shared history. I'm not opposed to electronic or pop music, I just think this particular remix is lost potential. I would give it a grade of C.

Dude is uneducated and irresponsible with his thoughts but I personally am not letting that ruin the band for me. He doesn't speak for everyone in Deftones, so it's unfair to let that be a deciding factor in enjoying their work. IMO.

100% agree on this -- Maynard's performance on "Passenger" is fantastic but Shinoda's instrumentation doesn't succeed in supporting that mood and power at all. I feel he handles every section with sufficient care with the glaring exception of the choruses

Man, I know this is gonna be highly contested, but after listening to the original, I like the remix better
I don't think the original is bad or anything, the remix is just something that more aligns with my taste.

I agree with this. It's much harder for me to reject an entire band just because one member holds really shitty views (although I will draw a line at a band sheltering an abuser or anything along that nature).
