Just went to Demonoid, only to find this notice: "We received a letter from a lawyer represeting the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and We need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this. If you reside in Canada, that is the reason you are being redirected to this message. Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience." CRIA = Canadian Recording Industry Association What the hell. Unless I missed some new legislature, I was under the impression that downloading of torrents was fine in Canada? This is bizarre. I hope it's rectified soon. Your thoughts?
Torrents are legal in Canada yes, the issue was however that the CRIA found several torrents of copyrighted material on the site (obviously) and demonoid is hosted in Canada. So, the CRIA are the authority that have the most power to do anything. They sent in a letter, and Deimos had to resort to blocking all Canadian traffic lest he take the site down altogether. The only way this is getting rectified is if they move their hosting to a different country. Although it does exceptionally suck for anyone living in Canada.
No matter, the tracker functions still work for Canadian IP's ... so just proxy in and grab your torrent files - then get to it
Yeah I read about that yesterday. It's really sick when the jury finds the defendant guilty in a case like that because you have to wonder why $222,000 is justifiable for downloading some music. It's absolutely ridiculous.
Didn't she only download like 22 songs? That's like two albums worth of music, which is around $40 bucks. I'd say they're going a little overboard on that.
I wouldn't worry too much, there's a lot of organisations and hacker groups set up entirely for donating money to average folk who get sued by the RIAA for piracy. This whole thing is just the RIAA's attempt to scare people, and it might work, on a very small scale and very temporarily. Piracy is growing, the industry is still very much alive. The record companies will tell you you're killing your favourite music, but the reality is their profit margins just don't look as good, and of course, they're paranoid.
Guns N Roses "Welcome to the Jungle"; "November Rain" Vanessa Williams "Save the Best for Last" Janet Jackson "Let's What Awhile" Gloria Estefan "Here We Are"; "Coming Out of the Heart"; "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" Goo Goo Dolls "Iris" Journey "Faithfully"; "Don't Stop Believing" Sara McLachlan "Possession"; "Building a Mystery" Aerosmith "Cryin'" Linkin Park "One Step Closer Def Leppard "Pour Some Sugar on Me" Reba McEntire "One Honest Heart" Bryan Adams "Somebody" No Doubt "Bathwater"; "Hella Good"; "Different People" Sheryl Crow "Run Baby Run" Richard Marx "Now and Forever" Destiny's Child "Bills, Bills, Bills" Green Day "Basket Case" Those are the 24 songs that she downloaded and now has to pay 222,000 dollars for.
How appropriate that she was downloading some Linkin Park. I didn't know people still listened to Richard Marx and Vanessa Williams. Not to mention fucking Journey.
I disagree. I think the entire case is bullshit, but when it comes to committing real crimes, I don't think someone's marital status and whether or not they have kids should be taken into account. You're either a criminal or you're not. I don't think this woman is a criminal, but it's not because she's a single mother. It's because she downloaded 24 fucking songs and caused damage to no one.
$222,000, at $9,250 per song. Wanna know how much the writer of a song makes per purchase of their song? 9 and a half cents. That's a flat, blanket rate across the entire music industry. ...Am I missing something here?
Isn't the CRIA just an Canadian office for the RIAA? They've just been unable to do anything here from the ruling a few years back that made downloading legal. Astat - Probably less that even. I'm sick and tired of this bullshit. I own about 20 CDs. I would return them ALL if I could for a full refund, just so the CRIA doesn't have my money, but I guess I'm going to have to sell them. I mean, it's bad enough that they're fucking us in the ass with the levy on blank media, but this? Over the edge. I refuse to buy any more CDs at all. Artists typically hardly get a single penny, and even that goes straight to the RIAA/CRIA until the artist miraculously turns a profit. So, to the CRIA/RIAA/etc: You've just lost a customer, and I'm not the only one. I will continue to expand my 20,000 song library, and support the artists by actually doing something that supports them, like going to a concert, thanking them personally and buying their merch. Sales are going down because of your idiocy -- who wants to buy DRM music, where they can't do anything with their music? I mean, apparently according to you, just copying a song to your iPod is piracy. I mean, who remembers the Sony rootkit? Yeah, that went down real well with everyone. Who's going to trust a label like that?
I'm pretty sure you're right. I don't know where I read it or heard it but I'm more than sure I read about or heard about the CRIA just being the RIAA's Canadian endeavor.
Yeah, I read it from somewhere, but I can't remember if it was a legit source, hence why I wasn't fully sure in my statement.
