    Taken from CNET:

Curious as to what everyone else's feelings are on this issue. I personally think they're taking this way too far, but that's just me. Looks like the RIAA/MPAA has a bit more lobbying power than I thought they did.

This just re-emphasizes the point I was trying to make earlier today: conduits have as much fault as the violater.

Agreed. The thing is, the industry is just shooting themselves in the foot with all of this. I already boycott the RIAA myself, and quite a few people I know do as well. It's spreading.

My school has sunk a couple hundred thousand dollars into equipment to block P2P due to pressure from the RIAA and the like. And who paid for it? The school, not the RIAA or other people who actually want this crap in place.

This will never pass through Congress.

    I hope.

It probably will. Because congress consists of a bunch of old farts who've never used a computer (remember, Ted Stevens is a part of congress...there's gotta be more like him). They know that downloading music is illegal, so they think that it must be stopped by any means necessary.

Thats why I don't think the US (or ANY government) should be legislating the internet. Because it always ends up being a bunch of old people who know absolutely nothing about how it works and just vote the way the lobbyist with the most money wants them to vote. Net Neutrality shouldn't even be an issue, but because you have all the big companies like AT&T, Sprint and Verizon (The 3 companies who own all of the lines and trunks comprising of the internet backbone in the US) telling these politicians that net neutrality is bad, they believe it.

The best thing we as consumers can do is boycott. Boycott the RIAA and big record labels. Boycott AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. Don't give them a god damn dime of your money. I'm glad T-Mobile's around, as they're the only national mobile carrier who isn't a subsidy of one of those 3, who I sure as hell don't want to give my money to.

Why don't they just block the tubes carrying illegally downloaded material with enormous amounts of material, enormous amount of material?

It is in my opinion that the Internet clearly should just be shut down.

    Elton John.

It's coming to that. Pretty soon we're either going to have to pay for absolutely everything, or they're just going to somehow shut the Internet down.

    So either way, nuclear war.

Oh it's all gonna come to nuclear war somehow, dw bout that.

Yea, they're gonna work out a way to stop this P2P stuff, it seems inevitable. Too much money at stake for them.

iTunes type file protection on all music is what I see coming.

Nah, not so much that, just inbuilt licensing/protection, like what's on all the songs you download from the apple store.

He can't, the tube that he would use to get back to his house is blocked by illegally downloaded material.

Yeah, this is a splendid idea. I'm sure after their financial aid is cut off, they'll stop downloading copyrighted material and start purchasing it with the money they've made working at Chilli's. Money in the bank.

This is total bullshit. The RIAA is basically getting the universities and colleges to do all the bitch work for them by basically threatening their jobs. Last time I checked, this was illegal. I forget what the term is, but it's not too far from blackmail.

The RIAA is SO stupid. They already see that college students download the most music (probably not true, but they seem to think that.) What they need to do is find a new marketing technique, not just saying 'use what we already have' because it's OBVIOUSLY not working. They have all this data that market researching firms would kill for, and all they're doing is being total idiots about it. The problem is that while our generation of technology moves in, the people in power in Government and big business are still of an older generation. The fact that these people don't understand computers for the most part is a pretty big factor in all of this too.

Doesn't really affect me. Half of my college tuition is paid for already and I don't dorm in the college, so there's no way for them to monitor my activity through the college.

Although, it is an extremely stupid idea.

RIAA has been cracking down like mad on my campus. Shutting down all the hubs...threatening to limit bandwidth even (bandwidth I pay for with my tuition)...
