All ya need is talent and practice. at least Chester isnt like the guy from the used. during live shows, he screams so damn hard that he throws up and says that it is veru very hard to go on becuase he has all that crap in his throat.
chesters scream is not forced. well...every scream is forced to a degree. but some just push it too hard and it sounds like sh*t. but chester screams from practice, and he doesnt push it, thats why he doesnt scream everything in the band, only some parts. thats why his voice sounds so nice, hes gotten to the point where it comes naturally and easily. of course now, his voice is probably strong enough he COULD scream everything, but that wouldnt be the traditional Linkin Park sound we all know and love. and that would just put them into the sterotypical metalcore band genre. BUT fortunately....he doesnt, and it makes Linkin Park unigue.
yeah like you said chesters scream comes with years and years of preactice and it probably would have something to do with the smoking. but in my opion i recken i can do a pretty good mike siging voice.
i can't do it-i can scream in a way similar to most bands that do it(like jamie/ian from lostprophets) but i'd have 2 say that chesters is unique it's not a full on scream but its not singing either-its wierd and thats why its so cool.
yeah thats true its not a full on scream....well...its close...real close. because most of the full on screams (depending on how high or low your voice is) come out really high (i.e haste the day, zao). or kinda low (i.e slipknot, hatebreed). but i think in chesters case because of the smoking it has changed his vocal chords a lot so that he can still scream intensely but it is still melodic.
