Brad Delson's Guitar Playing

Brad Delson is not really considered to be an exceptional guitarist, even amongst Linkin Park fans. Many of the riffs are quite simple, and the majority of the solos he plays in concerts can be quite awkward with the sweep picking and octave notes.

And then, I found this clip. Why doesn't he do these kinds of things more?

Because we don't deserve the full potential of Brad "The Guitar God" Delson. He does us all a favor by purposely holding back. The world aint ready for Brad's true skills.

Because something like that would be far out of place on an LP album.

And even so, what he was doing there wasn't really that impressive.

Idk, some more technical solos would've been nice on the new album. I think that is actually my main complaint with THP. I mean, he can do these things, as Een in this video and In Pieces. I don't know if it's a bad sense for what sounds good or if it's self consciousness or what. I don't really think he deserves the flack he gets.

He's mentioned he knows he gets flack on the internet and he doesn't really seem to care. I find that confidence interesting whether or not he's actually capable. So, if a song calls for it, he'd probably do something maybe but he's never going to just "show off" his skills. Also, if you read Derek's transcript (the one with the lot of "like"s  ) apparently, the rest of the band had a hard time convincing him to play that kind of guitar. If I remember right, for the last two records, Mike said he wasn't very much into playing guitar then.

Outside of the sweep picking, a lot of the type of stuff he was doing in that video ended up in some of the solos on the album. War has a whole bunch of that kind of stuff in it, it's just buried under a bunch of stupid effects. And the sweep picking itself was terribly sloppy (although probably better than what I could do - I suck at sweeps), so I'm not surprised he stayed away from it when it came time for the final solos that ended up on the album.

Brad really isn't as bad as people say. Based on The Hunting Party I would say he is actually a bit above the average rock guitarist(if not just average).
You can argue rather or not you like his riffs but on a skill based level they aren't THAT bad at all - while not being super impressive either.
But live he seems a bit more unstable and insecure, I get that he doesn't like "showing off" but his solos sometimes end up sounding sloppy because of that.
The "new" What I've Done solo shows that he is capable of improvising to a certain degree and that he isn't totally out of his comfort zone when he is playing solos.

And he can almost play the solo on GATS now :kappa:

I'm definitley hoping for more insane solos on the next album, even if it's not as metal. Imagine a song like The Catalyst with a crazy guitar solo #OP

Seriously it's like people just come in here to try and force negative opinions

Saying THP solos are insane because they're vastly superior relative to What I've Done is like saying Burn It Down is an insanely good song because it's better than Somewhere I Belong.

Relative degrees shouldn't factor in to whether something is good. Burn It Down is vastly better than Somewhere I Belong, but both songs suck.

So just because I'm on an LP forum, I can only express positive opinions? That's just plain idiotic. How DARE I have an opinion that differs from yours!

And like Coldplay said, bad is still bad, no matter what you compare it to.
