Inspired by the little discussion in the LP Covers thread, I decided I'd start this. Post your favourites, whether it's for pure technical proficiency, or songwriting ability. I'm going to leave the term 'new' fairly broad. I just wanted to exclude the obvious 'legends', like Malmsteen, Slash and Satriani, because I'm just an ass like that. Mine are: AJ Minette (ex-The Human Abstract) Luke Hoskin/Tim Millar (Protest the Hero) Omar Rodriguez-Lopez (At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta). Purely for songwriting ability. Oli Herbert (All That Remains) How long until someone says Herman Li?
hands down, kevin thrasher of lovehatehero but i do agree that AJ (used to be) from human abstract is bomb
Post some videos please. John 5 Paul Gilbert (20 years is recent?) Herman Li LAWL
- Ben Weinman (The Dillinger Escape Plan) Probably the best guitarist in the world currently. Technically proficient, versatile, knows how to write instead of going completely over the top. - Dallas Green/Wade MacNeil (Alexisonfire) - Jesse Lacey/Vin Accardi (Brand New) - Jordan Buckley/Andy Williams (Every Time I Die) - Steph Carpenter (Deftones) - Simon Neill (Biffy Clyro) - Rivers Cuomo/Brian Bell (Weezer) - Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, etc) - John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc) - Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) - Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) - Graham Coxon (Blur, etc) - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin, etc) - Chuck Berry - Django Reinhardt Not all them are recent or young but oh well. I like Brad's guitar playing, to be honest. And I'm not keen on Herman Li. Just to put that out there first haha.
Brad shits on Herman Li. That guy couldn't write a riff to save his life. John motherfuckin' Petrucci. The most talented guitarist ever. Period.
I'd have counted him as a 'legend', but oh well. Dean's list is great, there's a lot of people I'd forgotten about that he mentioned. I agree with all that's been said regarding Herman, hence my little bit of sarcasm in the original post. For those who requested videos, here you are: AJ Minette: Probably not the best representation of what he can do. Instead, listen to the song Nocturne on their Myspace, here. Luke Hoskin/Tim Millar: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez: Not much point posting a video, since I admire him for his songwriting rather than technical ability. Oli Herbert: I couldn't find any "Betcha Can't Play This" type videos for Oli, so here's a random guy covering an All That Remains solo instead.
Dear god, if anyone says it... Nah, he's just the most popular guitarist out there right now. As for my picks, I'm gonna have to go with some older ones, because newer guitarists don't seem to be as passionate about playing. Steve Vai Joe Satriani Slash Prince Brian May And, for kicks, and because he is a kickass guitarist, Mikko Lindstrom. There are "new" ones, but I can't think of any right now. I'll post more if I can think of them.
I'll just stick to names not already mentioned. Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher (Mastodon) Doc Coyle and Dallas Coyle (God Forbid) Rob Arnold (Chimaira) Kurt Ballou (Converge... mostly their later stuff) Ray Toro (My Chemical Romance)
He's not that great. He's fast, yes, but seriously, being fast and being good are two different things. Some of the stuff he does just sounds all garbled and jumbled. Just my opinion. I respect the opinions of those who actually like him, as long as they respect mine.
Justin Shekoski (Lead Saosin) Beau Burchell (Rhythm Saosin) I love these guys for their harmonies, Justin's Signature Spins and their ability to take what sounds like a muddy riff by itself to sound amazing with everything else. Colin Frangicetto (Rhythm Circa Survive) Brendan Ekstrom (Lead Circa Survive) These guys combining their guitars are amazing. They know how to create the greatest effect I've ever felt from a guitar.
Hey I'm not disrespecting anyone's opinion. I was just curious. Oh yes. Completely forgot about the inability to tell the difference between songs... Cause you know, can't tell the difference between Valley of the Damned and Soldiers Of The Wasteland and Trail Of Broken Hearts. Anyways... Alexi Laiho (Children of Bodom) I know. He's not that new but he's certainly one of the best. Synyster Gates (Avenged Sevenfold) Although I don't care for the band anymore he's still amazing. Gian Pyres (Cradle of Filth, Gorerotted) Again. Not so much new but still great. My favorite guitarist CoF had. Herman Li and Sam Totman (DragonForce) They're fast, but they can slow down too. Also the solos they creates are amazing. Oli Herbert (All That Remains) He's great. Words are just not coming to mind right at the moment.
