Edited^. As far as I know they haven't finished writing yet, let alone recording, I dunno, doesn't seem likely. They are touring North America all this month though. Metallica only recently turned their full attention to writing. The last few years has been more about other projects like making Through the Never, setting up Orion Festival, Lulu, with some sporadic touring and writing in between. They're playing 8 shows in South America in a couple of weeks (& about 15 in Europe this summer), setlists are being picked by Joe Public. As in anyone who buys a ticket can vote for 17 songs from Metallica's entire catalog to play. Annoyingly most of the highest voted songs are the stuff that always gets played anyway. So frustrating. However, Metallica have confirmed that they will play a new song at the shows this year!
Oh damn, I didn't know Neon Trees have been working on a new release. Another record to look forward to.
I was under the impression the only thing holding them back was Maynard and injured band member. I would put money on a fall release.

MJK isn't holding them back at all (except for grape harvest when he needs to be at the vinyard 24/7 in Autumn) , though most people perceive it that way because he's so much more active, with APC, Puscifer & his wine, than the other 3 guys. Tool's method is Danny, Justin & Adam write the music and when they're happy they have it at a certain standard they give it to MJK. Maynard then goes off by himself and writes the lyrics while listening to the music. When that's done they all get together to tweak it. They don't hit the studio until everything is 99% written, then recording takes less than 2 months. Maynard's a workaholic, he works faster and is more prolific, so when the other 3 take so long to write quality stuff he gets bored. The reason A Perfect Circle was founded at all was because Tool took so long writing what would become Lateralus. This time around they've been writing since 2008/09 and only late last year (IIRC) started handing material over to Maynard, and even then it wasn't everything, just one or two [apparently long epic] pieces. As I understand it, they're getting close to finishing writing but aren't there yet, an Autumn release would mean they'd have to be recording already.
