That was Mike who said that.

Yeah when I first got to High School I was labeled the smart, shy guy you could manipulate and cheat off of. That worked for two years but then I started getting agressive. They also labeled me "white-washed". If a white person is a "wigger" than a black person is "white-washed" for hanging out with "too many white people", going out with them too much or just acting like one too much. Whatever that means. Now I'll probably get called a skater which is ok because I do skate. But man that inter-racial dating crap. Kids are HARSH! I got crap from people I didn't even know. Who really didn't even know if I was going out with the white girl standing next to me.

If I had to label myself I'm the musically excelled slacker/skater who's CD your butt will be buying some day.

yeah people call me either white-washed, goth, punker, or scene kid. very weird. i have never labeled myself and i never will. its a lot easier when someone calls you like a wannabe goth when you dont want to be a goth.

While it sucks when other people label you, I think labels are only truly bad when you label yourself.

Think about it. I'm going to be cliche and use punk as an example, but you could substitute ANY label. One day you decide you want to be punk. You already like some punk rock, and maybe the punks at your school are pretty fun to be around. So you buy combat boots and ripped jeans, and maybe an some Aus Rotten and Crass shirts. You hear that new Modest Mouse single on the radio, but you know, you can't like it, because it's not punk, it's "hippie ####." Then you run around yelling "Anarchy!" because that's what all the other punks do. Do you know much about anarchy? Have you honestly thought about it, looked at the world, and decided you think that's the way it should be? No, probably not.

Congrats, you've just conformed to another sterotype.

And like I said, you can fit that scenario into pretty much every label. And ultimately it's destructive, because you're not really you. And of course I'm not saying everyone who listens to Crass and wears combat boots is living a lie.

And we all do it, to different extents. Maybe some of you have figured it out and moved on, but I think subconciously a lot of us sabotage ourselves pretty badly.

And of course, other people labeling you sucks as well. I had the father of a kid I babysit for once loudly proclaim "You're going goth!" Because I have purple hair and was wearing a black shirt. Yeah, I'm so goth [/sarcasm].

Even when people label themselves, what bothers me the most is when people refuse to associate with people of other labels. I don't have a big group of people I align myself with. My friends range from a politically right-wing prep to an incredibly left-wing "goth" and everything in between, and a lot of them are a helluva lot more alike then you'd think.

    *takes a deep breath*

    *looks up*

Did I really write all that? Damn. Don't bother to read it, it's probably incoherant and full of misspellings anyway.

    Thank you. :)

I will say that, being homeschooled, I probably haven't had to deal with other people labeling me as much as people who are in school...but then again maybe not. I don't know.

Yeah, you'd have a reprive of sorts because of that. The rest of us walk around with a tag on our heads...

Labels used to bother me too. But I learned to deal with them in my own way. I just wear whatever label "they"--whoever they may be-- give me, accept that they are going to do that, and mock it. "Oh yes, I am such a nerd."

This is how Webster's II New Riverside Dictionary defines punk:

punk- 1. a young inexperienced or insignificant person 2. A young hoodlum 3. Of inferior quality 4. Of, relating to, or being a purposefully bizarre style of dress affected by punk rock groups

First of all that is some bullsh#t. I'm not saying that I'm punk or anything but plenty of my people call me that. Maybe because I hang out with people that are punk, I don't know. I was amazed and pissed off what the dictionary thought to be "punk". Insignificant and of inferior quality?!?! What the hell is that about? Next lets look at the definition of preppie:

preppie- a student or young adult who dresses and behaves traditionally and conservatively

Well what do you think? They just left out the part of them being stuck up and annoying! (no offense to any preppies that are not like this) When I looked up the word normal in the dictionary it defined it as ordinary, so I looked up ordinary and it gave me usual, so I looked that up which gave me common. I went through a series of words until at last it gave me a word that sent me straight back to the word normal...

punk rock- hard rock music marked by themes of bitter hostility toward established society

Ok so maybe the punk rock one is somewhat accurate but do they really have to use the words bitter hostility?

I'd also like to say that it does get annoying when people call me goth or punk and later on call me a poser or a wannabe for not wearing "goth clothes" one day or something stupid like that. I really does piss me off. But I guess that's just the way our society works... What can we do about it? (Punks vs Preps in an all out war) Sorry forget I said that....
What do you think about this? Speak up, don't be shy....
