Okay. What's the deal with labels? You have ALL been told in your life one time or another to just accept people for who they are, so why the hell don't you? I mean I understand if like, it's offending to someone, but just to label because you don't know them and like to think of them as "that slut" or "that goth".

One question. WHY? I for one HATE being labelled and if you label me right infront of me, let's just say you'll see my fist instead of my face. Those that don't belong are "loners" or "outcasts".

Why do people do that to people? Labeling someone ONCE infront of a large group of people could determine what people think of that one person for their entire school career. Personally, I don't give a flying monkey what other people think of me, but it has a huge impact on other people. I don't mean to bring this up so randomly, it's just I always hear my friends labeling people and it pisses me off.

It is human nature to label people right as you see them. Some people just say it out.

    Labels are rediculous. Period.

Just explain to the labeler that I'm not in any group...but that I have a personality that no one can classify

and then politely tell them to #### off.

    Scratch that last part.

Labels are just a way for people to degrade others in some ways.

Even though I try not to label people, I sometimes do. If I know two people named "Jackie" (in which I actually do), if the name ever comes up in conversation, I'd have to ask, you know, "the Asian or the black one?" But I rarely try to do that. And it's not a real bad way to label, but it's still a bad thing to do in general.

However, on a personal note, I've been labelled the "Goth," which lead to constant bullying, insults, teasing and everything else basically done to those the bullies and jocks hate. I was humiliated and looked down on thusly leading to a major break in majority in my friendships at my old school. It's really a horrible thing. My situation got really bad to the point I almost did something really stupid, so therefor my parents and myself moved me out of public school. I know people still label me and laugh at me for not understanding, but I also know I can't help but accept it because they're too immature to understand at their age (even though I know some of them are seniors and everything, they're still ignorant and immature).

A large part of the reason we're labelled is people refuse to bother a lot of the time. They usually act upon first impressions, and a lot of us do this, I think it's human nature, so then people believe it to be "OK" and continue to act upon that judgement when it could quite possibly be wrong. Very seldom do they forget about the judgement and try to get to know the person more.

And yes, the labels put on me did in fact put me into the "loner/outcast" category. No one wanted to bother being seen with me since their reputation and egos came first. It sucks, but hey, sometimes you can't fix things the way you want to, it takes alternatives to make it work.

Exactly what I was going to say. As long as people are different, people will label others. It's just some useless thing I've learned to ignore...it's inavoidable.

I'm about as guilty as the other guy when it comes to labelling, but I do it subconsciously, and never verbally. You have to remember that there's more to a person than just outer appearance.

I guess labeling in your mind is not that bad...it's when they classify people by like posers, etc that it gets bad. I don't even know what a poser is but you know...i don't really care.

In my opinion labels suck period. I mean I hate it, my friends sometime label people and I'm just like, "Hey, you don't know them, so don't say that ####, you know."

All my life I have been called so many things: a nerd, loser, freak, goth, ect and that lead to a serious case of depression, which I still go through and I just hate it.

Luckily now that I'm older I finally understand why people do the stupid things that they do, I just wish they would grow up and stop this childish bull ####, I mean heres how I am, I don't care how you dress or anything of that kind.

The only way I will hate someone is if they do something to hurt my friends or family or is if there just an asswhole period.

Well to end this with how I started it, labels suck period.

It's kinda stupid that people label other people. Just because someone wears all black cloths dosn't make them gothic. They could just like wearing black for the hell of it.

Some people can be so narrow-minded. Because of their ignorance they have to label other people by appearance and music tastes, nothing more. I have been called "Dirty skater", "goth" and "freak" amongst others. The people who say that to degrade those who dare to be different are d***heads, and if you don't like them then you shouldn't give a #### what they call you. I have labelled people and I still do sometimes, but I don't do it to degrade people like others do.

When my cousin came over a couple of weeks ago she was looking through my cds she went "How can you like The Beastie Boys, Slipknot and Ash?". It's called eclectic taste. I know that has nothing to do with labelling but it's a prime example of how narrow-minded people can be.

I was labeled at the beginning of my stay at my school as a loser and a nerd, a social reject, simply because I'm more intelligent (as in 97% average 'more intelligent') than pretty much anybody else at Oak Park. Because of this, it's almost impossible for me to make any new friends or find any relationships at school. People just avoid me, even though I never did anything bad to them at all. When I start talking to someone, they leave. When I walk by a group of people, they scatter. If I (gasp!) try to talk to a girl, she'll pretend to have something more important. Life for me sucks major hairy ass, and it's something I have to deal with, but never be able to do so. I'm just 'one of those cases', a nice guy whose only fault was having a gift, and being labeled a reject for it. People, all I ask you is that you never put someone through what I've been through most of my entire life. It's hell.

That's all I've got to say on this matter.

I totally agree. i mean i usually wear black and people call me goth and then when i show up wearing green plaid pants they call me punk. really i dont think im either. then they say im a poser and to decide whether im goth or punk. i just like putting on different clothes that i happen to like. i hate getting bothered just cuz of the clothes i wear. a few years back when i dressed in "normal" clothes, i got respect from people, but now all the guys are ###### botherin me all the time, and doing #### to me. its so aggravating....

I think I've always been labeled. First, it was ''The French girl'' 'cause my parents are from France (even my teachers labeled me) Then I was the ''walking encyclopedia'' 'cause my general culture is more developped than 95% of the people at school. Later on it was ''the anti-social freak'' because I'm so shy that when I meet new people, I put a ''talk to me and die'' face.

Hell, Miss S. once told me: ''Oh, you shouldn't go to Le Vieux you're more of the Maisonneuve type.'' when we were talking about junior college! As she was one of my closest friend, you can only guess how pissed I was!

And recently, I was labeled as ''The Canadian girl'' when I was in Spain. I didn't mind because we were all lebeling each others because people were coming from a lot of different places (Da swiss kids, The Italian girls, Nashville crew, North Carolina chicks, etc).

I personally think that there are ''good'' and ''bad'' forms of labeling. Some may be offending, like if you're labeled as The Alcholic or The Nerd, etc but some aren't really that bad. But just like everybody else, I tend to label people, I just try not to say it out loud.

    Remy sed it:
    "You know what I mean
You could put a label on a life
Put a label on a lifestyle

    .
    .
    You know
Put a label on how you wake up every morning
And go to bed at night
    .
    .
    .
    There's a lot of change
Everybody's always up with the labels
There ain't no label for this ####
    They're always going to try
To put a label on it
    To try to create something
So they can water it down"

yea, labels, i guess it's human nature? egos and power, it's their choice that they put a label on someone because in the end they'll just get it back, as a return favour.

You have to think about the people that label others the most. What do they have to lose? Are there friends going to abandon them for labeling someone? I don't think anything's going to change until the person/people most kids look up to, or want to be like, are totally against it.
