I was having a conversation with a friend last night about how System of a Down was initially a difficult band for me to get entirely into because they can be so weird/chaotic at times, and that led to a discussion of bands that the average music listener may find difficult to swallow on the first few listens. I certainly think Nine Inch Nails is one of those bands. Even on these forums some people say they are too noisy or different to get into. I know I was originally that way with The Fragile. It took 3 or 4 listens, listening to the album all the way through to truly appreciate how good it was. Can you think of any bands the average music listener (or you) may have difficulty getting into on a first listen?
Circa Survive (Definitely) The Sound Of Animals Fighting Halos My Chemical Romance (Depending on what music you ALREADY like) Panic At The Disco Angels And Airwaves (A lot because of so much Controversy but Tom Isn't an asshole, Read his latest AbsolutePunk Interview) Mayday Parade (They were for me) Envy On The Coast Days Away
The Sound of Animals Fighting FOR SURE, NIN, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, Bright Eyes, Between the Buried and Me, Circa Survive, Fall of Troy, The Human Abstract, Muse, The Prodigy, Showbread, Thrice, Tiger Army, Tool, TV on the Radio, Underoath, Zero 7. And some bands that became my favorites only after MANY listens... AFI, Brand New, Slipknot And of course... Shwayze, Simple Plan, the Jonas Brothers
I can't get into Nine Inch Nails or The Mars Volta at all. I don't know what it is about them, but I just can't get into them. I like some Nine Inch Nails songs, but overall, I dislike them. I'm not sure what it is about The Mars Volta I don't like, but I dislike them a lot. It's actually quite easy for me to like a band. As long as they sound good and you can tell they enjoy what they're doing, I'll probably like them. I'd imagine The Devil Wears Prada is a hard band to like, though.
Same here. For me, Tool. At first I was like, 'wtf is this' but then I started really listening to them, and they're one of my favorite bands. They're so in depth, and interesting.
I like Coldplay's last three albums but not Parachutes. That's their one album that actually is boring to me, but it seems to be their most highly regarded in a lot of instances.
Converge and Zao were hard for me to get into. I originally detested the harsh vocals, but I soon became accustomed to them.
Yeah, I used to think Converge were a load of crap (not due to the kind of music they play, I just didn't realise how good they really were at it for whatever reason) but now they're one of my favourite bands.
The Dillinger Escape Plan The Number 12 Looks Like You The Sound Of Animals Fighting Protest The Hero Most mathcore bands are very hard to get into, hence 3 of the 4 there...
simple. One I can tell you was Korn. It took me some about 4 listens to get into them when I started out. but pretty cool...
They were easy for me to get into. I just heard them and was like 'Woah there fkn awesome' But yeah i understand that they might be hard to get into for some people. KMFDM is a hard band to get into. I'm still trying. It took me a few listens of Opeth to really 'get it' as well, but when you do...
Atreyu Bullet for My Valentine Slipknot Breaking Benjamin Gorillaz Killswitch Engage Metallica Muse System of a Down etc.. There were a lot of bands that took me a few listens worth to get into. For a while the only music I listened to was Linkin Park and Korn, and that was all the way up to my Junior year in high school.
Lamb of God - When they first came around, I didn't find them great. I thought Black Label was a horrible song. But when I heard the song Ruin, I fell in love with them. And I also think Black Label is great. Coheed & Cambria - I first heard them on Headbanger's Ball and thought they were awful. I think it was the fact that the face and the voice didn't match up. But, then Welcome Home came out, and I thought it was their greatest song. Two years later, I decided to give their other songs a try, and now they're one of my favorites. Nine Inch Nails - I couldn't get into them at all. Closer was the only song I could really listen to. Their newer stuff I love. But the older stuff, I still have a hard time getting into. Norma Jean - As hard as I tried, I can't get into them. But I do enjoy them live. Which weird. Super Joint Ritual - The singer of Pantera's band. Loved Pantera. Don't like SJR's studio work. But put them on a stage and I'm happy. Slipknot/Marilyn Manson - These bands had the reverse effect on me. I loved them. But now, I have a hard time listening to a full song by them.
Muse. I like "Time is Running Out" and "Knights of Cydonia", but otherwise, I just can't do it. Deerhunter. Tried. Failed. Bashed head off of wall for even trying. Inkubus Sukkubus. Indie Pagan metal is a bit hard to understand. Thursday. I just can't do it.
