Well Minus, I have seen more of war than you'll ever see in your entire life and this song does nothing to me. He tried to write a touching war song but what he wrote is cheap in the least. But to each his own I guess, this is just a song and de gustibus non est disputandum..
Everyone who feels like they can change the world with a song, writes a song like Hands Held High. No offence. But songs like this is OLD! The topic is old.
So, I guess you're going to hate Gaga's new album because the word that's been going around is that it's going to be a lot more political. Which you've so admirably state, is old. But really, how can it be old when it is still relevant today and will be relevant for a very long time to come?? With that kind of argument I can say, love poems are old, comedies are old, tragedies are old. The list goes on and on. I'm not trying to attack you but really, the logic behind your argument just isn't fair. There are many thing that are "old" but as long as they're relevant, it really doesn't matter.
I really don't see the need to point that out though. But yeah, I love the song, but that's just my own opinion.
I interpret the lyrics as being observational rather than 'preachy'. Even when they resort to 'Amen', I think that's intended to be ironic, somehow. Anyway, yeah, I love "Hands Held High"; lyrics, delivery, instrumentation, vox layering ... I like all that. :3
The one thing that scares me about this album is that we've heard it deals with a lot of current events and world politics and stuff... I just hope LP doesn't try and shove some Left-wing garbage down out throats like WAY too many musicians today try to do
It should be noted that Mike commented on that Rolling Stone article claiming he wasn't a fan of how they described ATS. So don't worry! Maybe just one song. Or part of one! I personally don't care. Whatever floats their boat floats mine!
I'll also just deliver my experience. I think this song was written in much the way similar songs were written during the sixties and seventies about Vietnam. We are undergoing a trying time in trying to figure out things like basic fairness in society, and this is exacerbated by the fact that our unlimited shopping spree is pretty much over. If you ask me Mike's tone is populist, anti-corporate, and angry. The song resonated with me for those reasons and I found it to be one of the ones I continually went back to. I don't want to say it's more or less better than other songs as a result, but I know I've had to listen to this song several dozen times more than most songs I've listened to because I enjoy it and it is powerful.
Ok, let me go ahead and have my input on the song. Hands Held High, for me, is one of the best songs put out on Minutes To Midnight. I've never really been a huge fan of political music, since a lot of it that is put out is mainly 'Oh, the government is garbage, and my opinion is better because that is what i think.' Hands Held High isn't necessarily like that. Hands Held High seems to keep it real. Instead of saying that Bush is an idiot, Mike raps about how the media portrays Bush as, and how the general public views him, which is very true, since the majority of the media (mainly Late Night shows and Colbert Report/The Daily Show) seem to make Bush look like he was one big joke. All in all, Hands Held High is different for the band, and i think it gets most of its bashing because of how different it is, and how a lot of LP fans don't want to hear anything political come from LP, and would rather have songs about despair, pain, and how i was treated back when i was younger, which were great back in the Hybrid Theory/Meteora days, but now its time to move on and come up with something more mature and meaningful. Since LP REALLY shouldn't have anything to complain about now, should they?
Both wings, to make a bird. Also, to make this song: I'VE GIVEN UUUUUUUUUUUUUP I HATE ABORTION BUT I'M GONNA VOTE PRO-CHOICE
Wow. HHH was lyrically inspirational and is outside the box of most LP songs. If you prefer "what the hell is wrong with me" or "dont turn your back on me" compared to something that relays a little intellect and a bit of sophistication and something that reflects on real events well then...... I have nothing. HHH is awesome. Thats all there is to it. www.shh.com
A cheesy, horrible song on a lackluster and disappointing album. With that being said, I like how Mike's vocals sound at the end.
AMEN, couldn't agree more. I know you like political stuff like me, because i saw a comment about Rise Against Personally i think more political stuff from LP would be good. Ofcause it should be somthing they knew somthing about, with real knowledge behind it
