I can honestly say that this song is highly overrated. From Mike's preaching verses with stuff he probably isn't experiencing, to the gospel rock style at the end. "Amen" was never a lyric I would want to hear from the band. It's just a bad song off of a decent album. What do you all think?
I could start going over everything I said when I was arguing with spraypaintnink in the shout box, but rather I'm just going to say that I highly disagree.
I don't necessarily like or totally agree with the preachy verses, but it's still a good song. Certainly not the worst on the album... It could be better if it had a real chorus
I disagree. Not the first time someone's written from a perspective other than their own. Where? Why? I think it's a good song off of a decent album.
I highly disagree. Those are probably some of the best lyrics Mike has ever written imo. I hate it when people blatantly dub politically-themed lyrics as "preachy". He wasn't PREACHING! He was being real! So it's not allowed to write from someone else's perspective? Well with that logic, you can write off bazillions of great songs.
People write lyrics based on stuff they experience? I'd hate to be this guy: Mama, just killed a man Put a gun against his head Pulled my trigger, now he's dead Mama, life had just begun But now I've gone and thrown it all away Mama, ooo Didn't mean to make you cry If I'm not back again this time tomorrow Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters It's too late, my time has come Sends shivers down my spine Body's aching all the time Goodbye everybody - I've got to go Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth Mama, ooo - (anyway the wind blows) I don't want to die I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
In my opinion, HHH is a decent song in a good album. Lyrics are good, but I'm not a fan of the music. I have no idea why you think it is overrated. I mean, I've never seen the song in a fan-made Top 10 or Top 5 LP songs, or someone saying 'OMGZ HHH THE BEST LP SONG EVAR!'
Just because Queen's lyrics are good doesn't mean that Linkin Park's are too. And yes, a lot of people do write lyrics from their own experience..
No one said anything about whether they're good, just the matter of writing things from different perspectives.
1) The song is hardly overrated. It gets its fair share of bashing. To be honest, I hated this song when I first heard it. 2) The verses are some of the best work Mike has ever done. That's not an opinion, that's a fact. 3) It's not a bad song. Nothing great, but not bad.
If you all think that Hands Held High is such a great song, prove how it is. There hasn't been a valid argument yet. The only great counterpoint I've seen today was the "rapping about what you don't experience". That's been done a million times, that is very true. The song is highly overrated, but it is great for the album. It just dosen't make the cut for me. The verses are great, but the actual content of the lyrics are kind of lame. It's a stale song. "Risk something, Take back what's yours, Say something that you know they might attack you for" -the best line in the whole song. That's the only good I found out of it. 1) It has it's bashing because it isn't the great of a song. 2) I agree, but on The Rising Tied, he was amazing. 3) I just said it was overrated. Not a terrible song.
Prove how it's not good. You made the assertion that it was overrated in the first place, and practically everything you've said since is subjective at best.
The boring marching drums in the background? The lack of a decent chorus, in which this song could've easily had one? The most boring ending to a song, even though the lyrics were kind of decent. And of course, in MY OPINION it's overrated.
You're welcome to your opinion of the song. I found that it was intentionally done differently in order to make the point the song was trying to make. The drums in the background, the emphasis on mike's voice, the amens. It's a song meant to be calmly listened to, to contemplate, to think about. Like all pieces of art your experience is your own and I can't tell you yours is wrong. For me, though, the song was easily one of the best on the album in terms of power.
Thank you for saying it's just my opinion. It used to by my favorite on the album. I just grew out of it and realized it's really stale after a couple of listens. I do agree with the power thing though, songs like "No More Sorrow" are loud, and the power and emotion is almost forced. That's one of the best points, if not the best point given to me so far. Power.
Back when I first heard it I probably would have agreed that it should have a harder beat, maybe it still could but I think too much of a prominent and complicated beat would take away from the rest of the song. Depends what your idea of a decent chorus is and whether it would fit into this song. I guess it could probably have had a better one and more of a hook, then again not every song has to be really catchy and melodic and you kind of get that at the end. Why's it boring? Don't act so much as though your opinion is objective then.
