With most bands I listen to, the first single has always sucked in comparison to the rest of the album. The first single always has the worst lyrics, and when stacked up to the rest of the album..it can't compare. Somehow I feel this album will no different. We haven't heard the best this album has to offer.

^ But What I've Done was pretty high up in the MTM quality order, IMO, and from what I've heard of other people.

My opinion? Don't love it, don't hate it. It's a fun song, not lyric-wise no but a fun song to jump around to and sing.

Feels like a cover song, like they tried to take a punk/grunge original and had Chester give it a once-over.

Not bad, but not his best work, like he was handcuffed a bit. Won't drive me away from the album, though, and it'll do well on radio.

Heard the new song and I can honestly say, the lyrics are bad, really bad. The music is alright, but good as a single, though it is annoying. I think that alot of Linkin Park stuff is starting to lose its grip on me, because they were that band that I heard on the radio. They were big so I listened to them.
But as you grow up, you'll start to grow out of this and start to listen to more technically good music and not just hit-music.
Stuff like Modest Mouse, Brand New, Thrice, Lydia and The Dear Hunter are really starting to get to me and now LP and pretty much everything these guys come out with is just not to that standard. Mike is the driving force of LP. He is probably the man I'll look at, not Chester. Mike is mediocre when stacked up against Dustin Kensrue, Jesse Lacey, Conor Oberst and others. But he is probably the most likely member of LP I will follow.

I think Linkin Park are capable of making music that is a lot more complex than what they have now. All you have to do is see them live, and how they improvise to see this.

The problem is however...not having to do with them, but the label they're on. Right now Warner is stifling any true creativity they have and not allowing them to expand as much as they'd like. I guarantee you if the next album isn't mainstream enough for Warner, that WB will force them to rewrite it till it's something they can sell.

I also guarantee you that with Mike's technical expertise, and joe's DJ experience (not to mention the proven skills the other members have shown live) that they could make a sound as complex as Muse. It's just as long as they're on WB, they're going to be held back.

I personally wouldn't mind LP going in that direction. Not like a Muse ripoff...but more Progressive Rock.

I honestly don't think there is as much daylight between them and Mike as you're making out, it's just a case of him actually delivering. In fact, in some ways Jesse Lacey in particular is still a work in progress and still has plenty of unfulfilled potential, as is the case with Mike and the rest of Linkin Park. Conor Oberst, while good, hasn't really wowed me that much yet although then again I'm still relatively pretty new to his music. Same goes for Isaac Brock/Modest Mouse, I've never heard Lydia before and from what I've experienced I think The Dear Hunter are pretty bad if anything. But yeah, I will agree as far as saying that, looking at it purely in terms of actual achievement thus far rather than talent and potential, most of those are better than Mike/LP.
Thrice are great musicians but, and don't hold me to this because I'm not saying it'll definitely happen, presuming they make the right moves regarding their next album I think LP can very feasibly make the sort of transformation they have. I mean, you can even draw some very solid parallels between their careers so far: let's say Hybrid Theory and Meteora are Linkin Park's Identity Crisis and The Illusion Of Safety. Minutes To Midnight would therefore be their Artist In The Ambulance, which was the watershed of Thrice's career as they began to experiment with their existing sound without completely abandoning it. So, presuming Linkin Park continue in accordance with this analogy, their next album could be their Vheissu.
Point is, I'm not saying they definitely will deliver but I see no reason to write them off completely yet. Not to mention that comparing this, Dead By Sunrise, something that as far as I know has never really tried to be much more than radio-friendly rock, to those musicians is pretty much an apples and oranges scenario. Just take it or leave it, I know I'm probably closer to the latter as well myself. But this is a side-project so, unless it exceeds my expectations by a very long way, it won't and shouldn't affect my opinion on the full band.

I totally agree with your second paragraph. I just hope it happens. The only reason I follow LP right now is because they're a bunch of nice guys and the Mike factor. Lacey hasn't reached his potential like you said and the same could be said for Mike. But like I said Mike is the driving force of LP while Lacey still has Vincent Accardi to look to. I feel as if LP is just a Mike project with a couple of others filling the spots. Fort Minor though is the hip hop side of Mike. I might not like LP as much as I did before but Mike is easily one of my top songwriters even if he isn't as good as others.
