I don't have 10 favorites (only), but these are a few I can't live without, in no order: Batman (1989) - I grew up with this film, and have seen it too many times to recall. It may be style over substance, but Burton's vision is incredibly penetrating, then and now. The Apartment (1960) - One of my first foray's into the great Jack Lemmon (and myself). Here Wilder gets it all right: a melodrama that springs with witty dialogue while tugging at our heart. My "favorite" film. Good Will Hunting (1997) - Love them or hate them, Damon and Affleck deliver in this film. There's a personal connection to this tale, which makes it even more poignant for me, but ultimately, Van Sant's emotional touch makes this film timeless. Fight Club (1999) - If this film doesn't change the way you think, you'd better re-check the wiring. Days of Wine and Roses (1962) - Lemmon and Remick's portrayals of alcoholic lovers is arresting. While the script may be less flashy than Wilder's, Lemmon's performance more than makes up for it. And kudos to Warner Bros. for sticking with the original, gloomy ending. Amadeus (1984) - A story of love, jealousy, revenge, madness, genius, power, corruption, lust, God, and music. It's an experience you'll never forget, and easily Milos Forman's defining work. Heat (1995) - Michael Mann's crowning achievment, and the best action film I have ever seen (because it's more than that). American History X (1998) - Everone must see this picture at least once in their life. Se7en (1995) - An homage to film noir that ends up adding to the cache in the hands of a masterful Fincher and rising Walker. We wish they could revisit this success, and serve up an another ending that you'll never forget. Sunset Blvd. (1950) - Wilder's last drama, and arguably his best. Don't let it's arcane title fool you: this is scary stuff, not to be watched alone in the dark. Other films worthy of mention: Citizen Kane, La Haine, L.A. Confidential, Psycho, Raging Bull, Some Like It Hot, The Empire Strikes Back, and Vertigo.
