I would figure this goes here, instead of in Random Chat?

Alright. I think I may have made a thread about this before. But it died quickly. So, here goes nothing.

Who here is in a Marching Band? Or who here has been in one? Who will be in one?

I'd like to know because I think Marching Band is one of the most amazing experiences anyone could ever have. My first year of Marching Band ended a couple of weeks ago, and it was absolutely incredible.

I go to Corona del Sol High School, which if no one lives in the Southwestern Region of the United States, has a well-known Marching Band. I was in it this year and I played Clarinet. And I have to say, it was an absolutely incredible experience. Our show was absolutely incredible and it was one of the best musical performances I had ever taken part in.

The show was called Strange Humors, and it consisted of:

    Strange Humors - John Mackey
Concerto for Orchestra, Sz 116. II. Giuoco della coppie (Game of Pairs) - Bela Bartok
Concertino for Four Percussion and Wind Ensemble - David R. Gillingham

So, how are you involved with Marching Band if you are? What instrument do you play? And how do you like it?

I know one person on here (Amanda, I think) who was in Color Guard. I know of no one else, though. I'm interested to see if anyone else has.

Hey! I'm a band kid. This was my last year in a high school marching band. My band was awful, our band director was terrible, and we played a lot of shitty music.

This year, we did a Nightmare Before Christmas show. I'd tell you all the details but I never bothered to learn the names of the songs, I just played them and hated every second of it.

I play mellophone and I was pretty involved. I had a solo (actually...it was a duet, but we called it a solo. I don't know why.) in my second year during Live And Let Die. I think we did a spy show that year.

I'm going to miss band even though we were the worst band ever and we always scored really low in competitions.

This is me doing my solo:

    I like the uniform, Darcy.

Hmm, so that's two people I know on the forums. Anyone else?

I was a band geek in high school. We marched at halftime during football games, but that was it. Nothing special.

We did, however, have a specified pep band. Went to all the home games, and any playoffs/championships that came up. I really enjoyed that. We had our own chants and cheers that we'd sing along to an improvised drum pattern. One time, we had half the stands chanting "Eat nachos! Drink cocoa!"

I would have liked to have a real marching band (I dabble in colorguard), but the band program was pitifully underfunded. *shakes head* And the band was always WAY better than the sports teams, too.

That sounds like fun. We have some traditions in the stands too.

At 4:20 in the 4th quarter, we do this dance where we sing, "Oreos for breakfast with milk in the morning!" It's fun.

Yeah, my bad was super under-funded as well. We got to a couple competitions but we also had to cut a whole bunch because of budget cuts. Most of the things that we did were free.

We had a couple of stands rituals as well. We created a tradition of just yelling, "FOOTBALL" in unison because no one in band ever knows what's going on in the game.

I never thought I'd be a band geek, but I got into it this year, and it's one of the greatest things I've ever done. I go to Oxnard High School, and we have a very well-respected band. I play in the pit, specifically congas/bongos, cymbals, and other percussion stuff. Our last competition is this Saturday. As for our show, it's called Instant Broadway, and we play:

    RENT
    Cell Block Tango (Chicago)
    Summer Nights (Grease)
Music of the Night (Phantom of the Opera)
    Jesus Christ Superstar
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again (Phantom)
    On Broadway (George Benson)

Next year I'm going to play snare. I'm already pretty much an honorary drumline member, since I'm the only person they let play in the drum room who isn't a drummer.

I was expecting someone here to say that, considering we play RENT. I'm just waiting until Amanda sees that.

My favorite's actually Jesus Christ Superstar because the whole thing's practically a conga solo for me. The only thing we had music for congas was RENT, and I hated the part, so I just made the whole show up because our director wanted congas in the show. The only thing not made up by me is the beginning of On Broadway because he wanted a solo-ish sort of thing on the bongos.

...Amanda was the one always raving about RENT, right?

Amazing show! I wish you were from this side of the country so I could actually see it. Even though this was my last year in band, I still plan to go to every competition.

I wanted to have someone record it at the next competition, but the problem is that we aren't going to the next one, so we're done. Too many people who are ineligable, and we're only a 1A band, so our director doesn't want to put us out there with 10 or so holes. Sorry.

I'd get the video of our last show, but it's horrible. The drummers sped up on RENT after we'd been playing it slower for a week, and there were so many marching mistakes we wanted to shoot ourselves after watching it.
