So I accidently deleted a folder which contained all of my family's pictures and I also removed it from the Recycle Bin.

Yes, that is very stupid. You can laugh but I also need help.
    *headdesk*

Now I'm trying to figure out a way to get them back. In a way I can do it myself...

    Any ideas?

You can, I searched around the internet and there are a lot of ways to do it but I just don't understand the "difficult" computer stuff.

So I'm looking for someone to explain an easy way or give me a link to good software or so...

What about system restore? Where it restores your comp till last time you shutdown your comp. It might work.. My friend told me that, she said she does it when she gets a virus lol.

That works for viruses (sometimes) but it doesn't for deleted files... but thanks.

There are some programs out there that let you find 'deleted' files... I don't know any off the top of my head but you can google around a bit and find something.

Well, as far as freeware software goes, i've no clue so you'd better start googling around, heh. If you can afford to buy (or not- ehm, you get the point) data recovery software, the most successful software is OnTrack's (link).

If the above don't work and the files are absolutely necessary to you, there have to be companies that recover erased data (you gotta take the PC or hard drive to them and they do it the hard way) but i don't know what the costs are over there. Try and check if there's one near your area and call them for info.

Keep this in mind, when windows deletes a file, it doesn't delete it, it just in essence says 'other files can take over this space if needed'. The more you use the drive, the less chance of recovery. Do what you can asap.

    Thanks Phantom Duck and Neil.

I found a program that did the trick. Not all pictures got fully recovered, though... but it worked for most. :)

Yeah, what Neil said is right. Just for the record, Windows (i don't know if that goes for any other OS as well) keeps all file positions in the hard drive in a "list". When you delete a file, Windows doesn't delete the file itself but its listing, so it's still on the disc but you don't know what cluster it's in. It's not until new files have nowhere to be saved but over older, erased files, thus sending them to eternal exile, misery and... ehm, so, try to save as few files as possible while you're trying to recover the files.

For future reference, can you name the program you used? You can never know when such a need will turn up ;p
