OK, so, Halo: Ghosts of Onyx came out last Tuesday here in the states, and I was wondering what everyone who bought the book thought of it.

Personally, I thought it was great. It had a The Fall of Reach feel to it, and compounded action and information really well.

    SPOILERS
Just about the only thing I didn't enjoy was the emphasis on the SPARTAN-IIIs. They focused on both the S-IIs and S-IIIs, but I wanted more emphasis on the S-IIs (because they're fucking bad-ass). The Master Chief wasn't really mentioned at all, and they killed off SPARTAN-043 (William), which kind of upset me a lot.

I really liked how the book covered the Covenant Civil War (albeit with a fleeting glance) and showed that the Elites may not end up siding with the humans in Halo 3 after all (which was what was hypothesized greatly). I also thoroughly enjoyed how they explained the abduction of Kurt (I forget his SPARTAN designation) to train the new SPARTAN-IIIs.

Another thing that grabbed me was how the SPARTAN-III program had existed for almost 15 years before the events of the Halo games, which I didn't see coming at all. I thought maybe the program had just started, and Dr. Halsey was taking Kelly to stop the program. I was wrong when the book covered the events on Onyx (which sort of made me mad, since the book basically made the Forerunner technology seem completely unstoppable, when it was easily dispatched in the games).

I thought it was kind of weird (and a sort of deus ex machina) when the rest of the Spartans ended up on Onyx with Dr. Halsey and Kelly anyway. She abducted Kelly for almost no reason at all. I thought it was almost pointless and just made for a lame side story that didn't seem all that fleshed out to me. It's either that, or the author couldn't figure out some plausible way to connect the storylines, so he just ended up having the Spartans go to Onyx anyway. It really did seem like a deux ex machina to me (and for those that don't know what that is, it's when something completely unplausible happens in a movie, video game or book that defies all logic).

Overall though, I really enjoyed the book, and it's going to be a hard wait for the next book and Halo 3.
