Goth rocker Marilyn Manson fears some of his fans may have helped George W Bush get into power following sarcastic comments he made about the President. Manson appeared on an American chat show in 2000 and told host Tucker Carlson his fans should vote for Bush after sarcastically condemning Democrat candidate Al Gore. And Manson, who is a staunch critic of President Bush, fears his comments may have been taken out of context and he may have inadvertedly helped him to win the election, which was one of the narrowest victories in history. http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=19519&comments=1
Why can't musicians be politically neutral??Or even if they want to be anti-war anti-bush blah blah they should do it consistently like SOAD not just during the elections.Only then we know that their intentions are clear and are not using the elections 4 self-publicity *cough* Eminem *cough*
I don't think their intentions (most, at least) are to persuade the public, rather voice their own personal opinions. No where does it state that the musician's words should be taken as truth or solidarity, so you can't really blame them for that. Eminem stated he released "Mosh" (which I assume you're referring to) because he felt his reputation as an outspoken artist was in question, or rather, the fans were waiting to see his point of view on the politics at the time. Also, Manson has some extent of reason to have a sense of "anti-" what ever. He, much like Eminem, has been known for his shock value, which majority comes from the personal politics scattered throughout his music. The same goes for System of a Down, though they're much more cryptic, in my opinion. I don't know what comments Manson's talking about in particular, but I still say it's not the artist's fault. This just goes to show, if this is a true, then this proves our society no longer thinks for it's self. It proves we no longer do personal research and justify our point of views by what the mediums tell us, which is usually bias one way or another. Anyways, part of being a true artist is you showcase self-expression. Your expression is taken as interpretation and does not necessarily mean that art form is in any way "correct." It is what it is--An expression. If people want to follow it, then like I said, that's not the artists' problem, per se.
So it's HIS fault. Actually, the first comment in that news post sums it up quite nicely; "Is this guy for real? Then the fan's would be at fault for letting him influence there decision, not Manson"
Hmm...? Blame Manson for my violence against my fellow peers, or blame Manson for Bush? I know which I choose.
Of course! Marilyn Manson is so important that's its his fault because he has so many fans. That's a fairly arrogant thing to say on his part.
