With all the recent uprising in fanfare for 30 Seconds To Mars on these forums, I thought I'd create a general 30STM discussion thread. But I'll be damned if I'm calling it an "official" one. I can't get over how this band could completely revamp their sound over the course of two albums and have them both sound so different, yet have them both sound so great as well. Jared Leto may be one of the most talented people alive, when you think of both his successes in the acting and musical worlds. One thing that does annoy me is when people refer to 30STM as "Jared's band". It kind of cheapens them when you're talking to someone who has never heard them before. I didn't hear "Battle of One" until I listened to the bonus song in "A Modern Myth" when I bought 'A Beautiful Lie' on its release date. I knew there were two bonus tracks for "Battle of One" and "Hunter", but I thought they were on an enhanced portion of the disc. Man, was I surprised. It became my favorite song off the album and one of my all-time faves. It's just so damn energetic. That song was the first song I listened to when I got my insurance paid a few weeks ago and drove by myself for the first time. 'A Beautiful Lie' was my favorite album of 2005, surprisingly beating out the new NIN and Cold releases. I would not have predicted that at the beginning of '05. It was really the only album I could listen to all the way through and purely enjoy without nitpicking at small problems. To me, it's very close to flawless. And what blows me away is that it's so much different from the self-titled. I would list all my favorite songs, but that'd be 99% of their catalogue. "Hunter" is a little too odd for my liking. The good thing about that song is that it's at the end of the cd, and I don't have to skip it when listening all the way through the first 11 tracks. Anyways, discuss.
When their first cd came out I thought it was mediocre. I liked "Capricorn (Brand New Name) , "Edge of the Earth" , "Buddha For Mary" and "Echelon". It just didn't do much for me...at the time. A couple months back I heard a few songs of the "A Beautiful Lie" cd and it completely changed my opinion of 30 Seconds To Mars. The singles "Attack" and "The Kill" are very well done and Jared's range in his voice is phenomenal. My favorite song off of the "A Beautiful Lie" cd is "From Yesterday". The lyrics, the music and Jared's voice just really get to me. I always have that song on a loop and for me it's one of those songs that's just perfect in every way possible. I want to see them live...badly (and I could have 3 times. argh <_< ).
30 Seconds to Mars is one of my favorite bands. I love both their albums. I like their self-titled album more than A Beautiful Lie, though. I think it's more atmospheric, and the lyrics are far more mature. A Beautiful Lie is amazing, but it's lyrics are a little too cliché - especially after hearing their self-titled. My favorite song's are "From Yesterday" and "Echelon." They're great. For those of you who don't know, "From Yesterday" is about Alexander the Great. The lyrics almost mirror Alexander's life, and since Jared played Hephaestion in Alexander, it only makes that more solid. They're outstanding live, too. Between the touring cycles for their albums, Jared's voice matured a lot and he's able to actually sound like he does on the albums when he sings live. Before, the band was terrible. I got to see them earlier this year and they completely blew me away. Overall, 30 Seconds to Mars is an awesome band. I hope their third album is more of a combination of their self-titled album and A Beautiful Lie.
I enjoy the "kill" song, but I did notice a sudden rise in affections towards the band so I decided to do a parody of the "30 seconds to mars" signatures. Battle of One ain't bad either. I'll go for a sitting for the whole album.
Has anybody seen their performances from Daily Download? Live strings backing Jared and Tomo on acoustic guitars for "The Kill" and "A Modern Myth". Amazing.
Au Contraire Mark, I believe "Hunter" is one of the best tracks on A Beautiful Lie. Even though it's a cover of a Bjork song I think the band really made it their own plus Jared's notes on it are spot on. The reason for this is really because I'm attracted to the more diverse side of 30STM, which is probably why I hold more of a preference towards their first album than their newest release. To me, their self titled debut made them seem like a modern day Pink Floyd, where as the second album sort of sounds like the other bands out there right now. That's not to say it's not an outstanding album, but to me the metal edge and experimentation of their first album almost guarantees more spin-time in my stereo than "A Beautiful Lie". Regardless...despite there being a completely different sound between both releases, all of 30STM's music is a cut above what else is playing on the radio right now. I liked them when they were still unknown (thanks to Will) but this recent rise in fanfare is certainly deserved. People need to realize there's much more to Jared than just his acting skills, and that he along with his bandmates have created something quite beautiful. 30STM will be the next Linkin Park in terms of popularity. Just you watch.
I like to call myself one of the first fans of the band on this board (Along with Will), but hey, I could be wrong. But yeah, 30 Seconds To Mars is one of my favorite bands. Their self-tilted album is defitnatly one of the best albums I have ever heard. It shits on A Beautiful Lie IMO. Don't get me wrong, A Beautiful Lie is great, but it dosn't live up for their debut. Man, just reading this thread made me put their debut back in my player. It's defitnatly a 10000/10 album. It's that amazing. I'm one of the few on this board to see 30STM live before ABL, and in all honestly, they were god awful lie. They really stepped their live show up, however. Their recent show I went to blew my mind away. EDIT: I'm still going to stick by my words. Though they are one of my favorite bands, "The Kill" is one of the worst songs ever made within the last 6 years. What the fuck was Jared thinking when he was writing the lyrics? The video is cool though.
I hope not. Don't get me wrong, being popular would be cool, but their fanbase would end up being even more watered-down by Jared-teenies than it already is. Also, I thought I'd point out that the lyrics in your signature are slightly wrong. "On a mountain he sits, not of gold but of shit" are the correct lyrics. You can hear it pretty clear, even though he sings that song kind of weird.
I think CDs only get parental advisory labels if they drop the f-bomb, I think. Or more than just one swear word.
I really like them. I personally liked A Beatiful Lie better than their self title album because of songs like "Kill", "Attack", "From Yesterday",... I think I'm one of their newest fans on this forum since everybody has been a fan for quite a while. I have to agree with Derek about them going to become as popular as Linkin Park became at some point. They're amazing musicians.
Not necessary Kaeton. For Eg.Appetite 4 destruction by GN'R has f words throughout the album but no parental advisory.Even Master of puppets by metallica. But i think these are the albums which got the attention of parents opposed to the use of foul language in music in the 1980's.
I think I need to go back and re-listen to their self-titled. I do prefer "A Beautiful Lie" over their self-titled but maybe once I listen to it again and again, I'll think otherwise.
I don't know what the criteria for a parental advisory sticker is. Evanescence's Anywhere but Home uses the word "fuck" but there's no sticker.
Mark: I agree with you that I hate when people call it "Jared's band", but it's true. In interviews they've basically said that someone else in the band may have an opinion, but Jared will say "this is what we need to do if we want it to be good" and that's the final word. There are no controversies in that sense -- Jared's word is final. It's like calling Nine Inch Nails Trent's band.
That's made even more evident by the fact that all their songs are written by Jared. As a whole the band's only written "Savior" and "From Yesterday."
It took me nearly four years, but I was finally able to find several rare songs that the band hasn't released publicly: "Occam's Razor," "Anarchy in Tokyo," "Phase I: Fortification" and "Valhalla." The latter's one of the first songs the band ever recorded. It sets the stage for their debut album, I think. The first three sound like they could've been put right in with the other songs from the self-titled album and might've even made it a little better. Then, of course, there's "Revolution," a song cut from the self-titled album because its lyrical content would've probably been misinterpreted as anti-American (being that the self-titled was released in 2002, after the 9/11 attacks). All I have to say is that almost every song the band's ever done has been amazing. Even in their demo stages, their songs were amazing (i.e. "Buddha for Mary").
