Stupid question, but if Edgar Allen Poe were a singer/songwriter today, what genre do you think he'd play? I think he'd be like Thrice sounds on "Vheissu". Dark emo/metal with melodic classical overtones.

PS: I wouldn't be posting so much, but I can't change the words under my avatar until I get to 1,000 posts....

You know, I participated in your "Favorite bands" thread, hell, I even went along with the "What did you listen to when you were younger," but this is taking it a bit too far.:p

I think he'd be a little like AFI, on "Sing The Sorrow", just without the metal edge and a far more classical sound.

Not trying to start another emo debate, but Thrice is nowhere near emo.

    God I hate that term.

NIN has a Poe-ish twist. My guess is something like that. "The Collector" seems like a good example.

He'd be in a grindcore band called Edgar Allen Poe and the Bloody Blood Vagina Blood

Nine Inch Nails!!!!!??????? "i wanna f*** you like an animal".... "bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve"...."will you bite the hand that feeds? will you stay down on your knees?"..... yeah NIN has the most poetic lyrics ever.

And I didn't say Thrice was full fledged emo, I said emo/metalcore. Like Eighteen Visions, Poison The Well, Atreyu, etc. There are different degrees and variations of emo. Just like how hard rock covers everything from Three Days Grace to Mudvayne.

Thrice is post-hardcore, not metalcore, not emocore, not screamo.

Plus "hard rock" refers to bands from the '80s, not bands from now.

WTH? Hard rock just refers to bands from the '80s? Yeah, and Mariah Carey isn't R&B because it only refers to singers from the '50s. Linkin Park won a Grammy for "Crawling" in guess what area? Hard rock. If the Grammies have a hard rock nomination, then it must mean that it still exists. Do your research before you say something like that.

But you can take consolation in the fact that Thrice is post-hardcore. But considering the fact that you think hard rock is limited to Kiss and AC/DC, I wouldn't expect you to know that emocore is a form of post-hardcore.

Keep in mind that excessive posting can get your post count reset back to zero, or even a negative number if one of us is in a really bad mood.

    Congrats, you quoted three singles.

That's a very uninformed opinion if you're going to base their entire sound as perveted around three singles, when the band has well over a hundred songs.

Sure, some of their lyrics are suggestible, but other than "Closer", they're not meant to be taken literally.

    Furthermore;

"I pick things up, I am a collector
And things, well things, they tend to accumulate
I have this net, it drags behind me
It picks up feelings, for me to feed upon

There are times, plenty of times I wish I could let it go
But it's time to breed and it's time to grow inside me
There are times, plenty of times I wish I could let it go
But it's time to make me think, things I don't want to know."

We studied Poe for a month in my English class this semester, and I'm somewhat familiar with his writing-style from the couple of classes I attended. When I heard "The Collector", I thought it had some Poe-ish qualities. The self-narrative, introspective type of writing.

I think he'd be doing Sunn O))) type stuff.

EDIT: Or maybe some darker Type O Negative like sounds.

I'm an extreme edgar allen poe fan which is why I thought his music would be dark. Each one of his stories possesses a dark quality to it, and when you read about his personal life it really begins to make sense.

Some of his stories just give me chills.

Congratulations! You've successfully pulled off a noob-feat we here at the LPA like to refer to, lovingly, as "baseless and senseless bashing."

I've done my research, but it appears that you haven't. I never said R&B doesn't refer to Mariah Carey. If you knew anything about how genres classify musicians, you'd know what I'm talking about. Talk to any respectable music magazine and they'd tell you the same thing about genres. AC/DC and Aerosmith are considered hard rock. Linkin Park is not.

For the record, using the Grammys as an example doesn't make any sense. They couldn't put artists or records in their proper genres if they tried.

Emocore's stylistic origins come from hardcore punk, not post-hardcore.

That's better than the stuff I've heard, but it's still not Poe...
Come to think of it... Thrice isn't really either. I'm thinking it might be a total metalcore band, like Killswitch Engage. "The Rose Of Sharyn" is extremely similar to the poems "Annabelle Lee", "Lenore", and "For Annie".

Numb And Broken, here I stand alone
Wondering what were the last words I said to you
Hoping, praying that I'll find a way to turn back time
    Can I turn back time?

What would I give to behold
The smile, the face of love?
    You never left me
The rising sun will always speak your name

It won't be long, we'll meet again
    Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting

I mourn for those who never knew you

It won't be long, we'll meet again
    Your memory is never passing
It won't be long, we'll meet again
My love for you is everlasting

    -Killswitch Engage

And I had to do Poe in school last year too, except it was my decision because we could choose whatever poem we like.

I have 2 choices with this thread:

    1. Babysit everyone in here.

    2. Lock it.

Seeing as how babysitters normally get paid, and I don't get paid, plus I'm lazy, plus I start my new, 40 hours a week internship tomorrow, and don't have time to babysit, I'm taking number 2

and yes, I realize I just said I'm taking number 2
