Can anyone recommend some bands that fuse Classical style music with Guitars? Kind of like what Trans-Siberian Orchestra does but I'm looking for something less Christmas-y.
It doesn't exactly have guitars but look up the band Apocalyptica. They're 3 cello players that play more towards the metal side. They're most popularly known for their Metallica covers, but they have a few cds of original music too.
Weren't Deep Purple meant to have had some classical elements? Not that I would know as I don't listen to them.
alot of songs by Muse has strings in them.. Also look for the string quartet tributes... they do alot of rock bands
Well...I'd call them more experimental than classical but Rush uses a lot of different instruments and sounds in addition to the typical guitar/bass/drums/vocals. They're a lot like Muse, three guys who somehow make a huge wall of sound.
Rush is great, I love them. I don't like either of the Muse singles I've heard so I dunno if I should get more of them or not. Are the newer singles pretty much like their older songs?
for Muse listen to the album "Origin of Symmetry" from start to finish.. if you listen to that album then you can judge if you like them or not
Check out Tori Amos if you haven't already. She has a lot of classical elements and strings in the background, along with some wonderful piano playing that she does herself. Also, there is a band called DeVotchKa that combines Ukranian classical music with punk rock and techno rock. They have a tuba player instead of a bass player, their drummer plays trumpet, and they have a violin player, among other things. They're fantastic and definitely worth a listen.
It's hard to judge Muse because they cover a really huge sonic spectrum with their music. I'm assuming the 2 singles you've heard are Hysteria and Time is Running Out? Well even if you only listen to the Absolution album, the other songs on it are a lot different than those 2 songs. Stockholm Syndrome is a fast, driving metal song that doesn't let up for its entire 5 minute length. Butterflies and Hurricanes has a classical piano solo in the middle of it. Sing for Absolution is slow and ballad-like but at the same time epic sounding. They're one of those bands that sound completely different on a song-to-song basis, instead of an album-to-album basis like most bands.
Muse is one of the greater bands out there that tend to use more orchestral instruments in their music. From time to time, Matthew Bellamy (sp?), who is the lead singer and plays the guitar, will play the piano. A good example is the song, "Butterflies and Hurricanes" off of their latest album, "Absolution." In the near middle of the song, Matthew plays this incredible piano solo which is absolutely mind-blowing. That's one of the songs where he basically plays the piano instead of the guitar. As tasta also said, the two singles off of Absolution (there are technically 3), which he said to be Hysteria and Time is Running Out, are the songs that don't necessarily use piano. If you think about it though, Time is Running Out uses piano at one point in the song (it sounds like guitar at first, but it's actually piano). Stockholm Syndrome is one of the strongest rock songs on Absolutionwith a guitar part that's fast, driving, and awesome. These 3 that I mentioned don't really use orchestral instruments, but many of the other songs on Absolution do and they sound absolutely awesome. I'd also recommend getting Origin of Symmetry, which is better than Absolution. That has some awesome songs on there too. Muse is a great choice, but I'm sure there are plenty of other bands like that.
I have a track thats pure piano goodness that Matt B composed himself.. it wasnt released so PM me if you wanna hear it... To me, Sunburn is the best pianoish song done by muse
