I listened to it and didn't like it. It was like Pink Floyd started playing terribly and Serj Tankian wrote the lyrics (as in none of them made sense). If I wanted to listen to a mental breakdown, I'd slam my head against the sidewalk.
LMFAO. Amusing review. I almost saw The Mars Volta live, with System of a Down, couldn't get tickets.
I think it's amusing that Frances The Mute was the first record the band wrote while NOT on drugs. I thought it would kind of be the other way around.
I know a lot of people who dislike them, but there's one thing you have to understand about The Mars Volta. You really have to sit down, listen to the albums multiple times, really think about it, look up the lyrics, go online and find things regarding the story, etc. to get into them. Personally, that's what I like about them is the kind of.. experience that goes on even when you're not listening to them. Some people don't like doing all that just to understand a record, they'd rather get instant gratification by listening to say, Seether. And that's okay too. I know when I first listened to Frances The Mute, I couldn't stand it. Then I went back, listened to some more, and learned more about it, and I liked it then. Also, I'd definitely recommend getting De-Loused In The Comatorium, if you can't find it anywhere, PM me and I'll make a tor.. buy it. It's definitely a lot more digestible and a little closer to "normal" music (ie no 35 minute songs/crazy saxophone atmospheric solos), and you'll probably like it more.
He'd probably like the Tremulant EP better, but then again, Cut That City has some big words in it, man..
I don't mind big words but it's the fact that I had no idea what he was singing about that was freaking me out. And his voice. Holy crap.
You remind me of... well, me when I first heard TMV. There is a story behind the songs/albums, trust me. He just uses words that no one has even fucking discovered yet.
