Cliffsnotes: A bunch of bible thumpers want to take over South Carolina's government and create a new government there based on the bible. Discuss.
As long as they aren't trying to force the bible onto people... that's all I can say, seen as I don't know much about what they're planning to do, I don't get the slaves bit.
Sounds like their goal is to make a christain government, i.e., if you're Muslim/Jewish/Bhuddist/Atheist/whatever, you're commiting a crime and can be arrested. And they probably want to make slavery legal too. Granted, this will never happen, but its sickeing that some people actually want to do this crap.

I hate religious extremists. Nothing wrong with being christian, but outlawing other religions/beliefs... can't state what I'm thinking because I don't fancy getting banned. And slavery? Two sides to this one.... you can't make anyone work and not get paid, it isn't right, but on the other hand, wouldn't they have a roof over their heads and food to eat? However, they wouldn't be able to buy themselves a house and get out of there if they weren't being paid, so no. I just got put into a really bad mood
@ Intergalactic Christ: People without homes and food don't need to resort to becoming a slave to get a place to live and food to eat. That's why we have soup kitchens and shelters.
But they might want a job, or safety.
Being a slave is not a job. A job pays. Safety? Yeah right. In the 1800s, slaves were treated like animals. They were abused, treated like absolute crap by their owners and sometimes killed. Being a slave is not a job or is it safe. I think they would much rather be in shelters.
But they might want a job, or safety.
That's true but they could still try to get a job while living in a shelter. It would be hard but I'm sure it could be done. About the safety thing, I doubt they would be much safer if they were still going to be beaten and killed like before.

I was thinking more along the lines of: There could be anybody in the shelters, including people pushed to commiting crimes to aid themselves to live... we can imagine what that might result in. But when you're in a house, nobody is very likely to wander in off the streets... I'm trying not to use specifics here because they really could do anything.
Do you not know how slaves were treated back when slavery was legal? Why the hell would anyone ever want to be a slave? I'd rather take my chances in a shelter

I don't even like doing what my own parents tell me so I doubt I would like listening to a complete stranger.
This "Christian Exodus" thing has been going on for some time now...a year or so if I remember correctly. Anyways, their ultimate ambition to section off at least a part of the state and run it with total disregard for all rules/laws except their own laws and beliefs (which I believe fall somewhere under the "radical Christian" category) Never gonna happen (Or at least I hope not)
I would hope it would NEVER happen. I have nothing against Christians or anything but that just seems crazy to me. I can only imagine what would go on there.
I don't mind people being religious and all, but those people missed the boat by about two or three hundred years when it comes to having a religiously biased government- although the current administration seems to be doing a relatively good job reinstating that policy. <_<

I'd rather take my chances in a shelter
Eek, todd, somehow I missed all your posts. This time is nothing like it was in the 1800's. It's likely to be more humane, and they'll have rights too. I'd rather work than sit in a shelter, it would give me more of a feeling of being worthy of something. But that's just me I guess.
I wish you were right, but, sadly, you aren't. People are not more humane. Trust me, I live in the south (Well, Missouri was technically a neutral/border state, but the culture and thinking is very much like the deep south) and can tell you, hate is still rampant. The only thing stopping a lot of people down here from killing African Americans is the law. And if a new government came into power and said it was OK to enslave and do whatever you wanted with African Americans, then people down here would jump at that opportunity. It would not be any different than it was in the 1800s.
Heh, I have no experience of America, having never been before, nor do I really wish to go. I live in a mostly white community also. I don't mean enslave and do anything you want to them. Of course, it would mean working, but they wouldn't be allowed to hit the slaves or starve them, nothing like that. That is what I meant byt things have changed, this would not be tolerated anymore.
Yes, it would be tolerated, which is sad. The south is full of white supremacy and hate groups.
Hmm, well, like I said, I have no experience of America, I'm speaking about Britain...
