Lately, I've been logging on to the message board at http://www.mtv2europe.com and much to my chagrin, I've found that there seems to be a serious backlash against Linkin Park. There have been several topics in the past few days, branding Linkin Park a "marketing exercise" and basically saying they are manufactured, overproduced commercial puppets. It seems that a lot of these people actually bought Hybrid Theory and were fans of LP for a time, but have now turned against them and are adamant that they are nothing more than a mainstream pop band.

I've been defending LP all over the board, but it seems as though it's just me against everybody else. Some of the unfounded accusations and insulting comments people are making about LP are really horible, so please can I get some help here? If we infiltrate the board, we can stop this. I can't do it alone, so are you with me?

Well...pretty much what ever you say will not change what they feel. They have their own opinion and are entitled to it, and it's a shame that they feel that way. One thing is that everyone will never like LP, it's too soft for hard rockers, too loud for popsters, and has guitars and drums so it doesn't appeal to rappers. Just gotta deal with it.

    That was a perfect definition.

Don't worry about those people, it's "cool" and "hardcore" to say that more-mainstream rock bands are "stupid" and "sellouts". Those people are just tools, and followers.

not to mention these people have a completely bad image of linkin park in their minds. they're not marketing puppets; they've been having a lot more control over their own videos than the mainstream artists have. they write their own songs, and they know what they're writing about.

Look, I like LP as much as the next guy. But you can't sit here and tell me they've not become somewhat something along the lines of what they're calling LP. I mean, how many times have you saw an LP ad? Not to mention, LP has their own shoes out. No, that's still way behind Nsync or Britney Spears, but hell, they are getting there.

    I know, it sucks.

Whatever you say will more than likely change nothing about what they think of LP, sadly.

screw the MTV boards. stay here. :p

It wasn't Linkin Park who came up with the shoe. It was the fact that DC sponsers Linkin Park, and DC asked them if making a shoe with their logo on it would be ok. The shoe that has LP on it is already a shoe, all they did was slap an LP logo on it to make it "signiture" shoes. All Linkin Park did for that was say "sure go ahead".

Ok time for me to put in my whole two cents into the whole deal. This is directed at any of you who think LP have sold out.

Many people think because of the high amount of commercials before the release of Meteora and the amount of times SIB has been on mtv that Linkin Park have sold out. This is not true.

Any promotional effort or marketing strategy you see on behalf of Linkin Park is in thanks to Warner Brothers. Linkin Park has less say then you may think and most of what they DO have input on is the way things look and are presented. No matter how big Linkin Park is, Warner Brothers will always be bigger and thats why Linkin Park has to sometimes listen to the big boss.

LP knows that Warner Brothers is thier only hope as, being big does not guarantee that any label will sign you. Look at Mariah Carey, her dumb ass was booted from her contract and it took her AGES to get re-signed, even though her crappy voice got her huge celebrity status.

You guys know that as Linkin Park gets bigger there's no way they'll be able to keep 100% in touch with thier fans. They can never sell out if they dont want to, but that doesn't mean they wont encounter difficulty talking to fans as thier status rises. LP.com chats already get packed 4 hours before they start, and a lot of the people there are teenies who think the band is hot. Being big has its price and you guys should of known LP couldn't stay that close forever..its impossible. The thing is, they still care about thier fans. Regardless of thier fame.

That's why LP had thier streetteam in the video because they were trying thier hardest to get in contact with thier true fans, and if you read experiences from LPST members, they stayed HOURS after the shoot, making sure anyone who stayed got to talk to them. Linkin Park is the same band we knew 3 years ago, just a lot more famous. It doesn't mean they let fame to go thier heads.

And to all the people who thought SIB's video was poppy? It was the exact same type of video as In The End (huge stage, weird creatures, huge environments) and ITE was not a poppy video, regardless of how the guys looked or what not.

They call it pop because of the whole "falling into the bed, and floating" thing. HELLO? It's part of the storyline! Chester had to get into the world somehow didnt he? What did u want him to cough and then he was there? No that would be stupid. You guys are so worried about LP selling out that you come up with the most unintelligent theories I've ever heard.

Linkin Park have not sold out, nor will they. Until you see LP action figures, thier name on every product and in 1000 commercials promoting products like Britney or Nsync, don't call them sellouts.

Selling out in mikes own words:
"I believe selling out means cheapening the relationship with the fans."

So far I have yet to see LP totally not caring about thier fans.

Yes I'm pissed about this. Because I run a website dedicated to the band because I support them with a tight grip, and always will. All my friends who have seen LP at concerts say they are the nicest and most caring people around, and I want to keep that perception of the band alive.

So naturally, if someone calls my favorite band a sellout, they are asking for it.

I will argue/debate with anyone who thinks they have a valid point that LP has sold out. Bring it on.

that's right. Some people can be very hard-headed to change their opinion. and it's not like it's going to affect Linkin Park in anyway by losing 25 or more/less fans.

Not everyone will like Linkin Park. Some of you kids are just going to have to cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it.

Just a newbie jumping in here...

I find through personal experience that alot of the anti-LP talk has very little to do with their music and alot more to do with just how big they've gotten. Seems to me that some people will automatically turn against a band the minute the said band starts enjoying mainstream success. Selling millions of records seems to an automatic trigger for a rock/metal band to suddenly become "uncool", as if the strength of their music is diminished in anyway by their success. I find that viewpoint utterly ridiculous.

I mean some of the criticisms are contradictory and unbelieveable in the total lack of sense they make. On one hand, people whine that Meteora sounds exactly like Hybrid Theory and is just a rehash of HT. But on the other hand, LP have sold-out? Sorry but that's just the most illogical thing I've ever heard. If Meteora is exactly the same as HT (which it most certainly isn't), how on earth could LP have sold out?

Like Mike said, LP didn't court the mainstream, the mainstream came to them. And for a band that work so hard and sound like the most sensible group of people in music, they deserve every bit of success that comes their way and I say very good on them.

Everyone else can just stick it.

All I would have to say in response is.

They're talking about selling out and being commercial?

"Hey, you're on an MTV MESSAGE BOARD".

commercial puppets... OMG... BAHAHAAHAHAHHHAHAHAH dont even get me started
you want commercial puppets go see 50 Cent or any of that rap crap. Its all commercialized make money sh!t. I bet you that even if [LP] sold 5 000 albums, they'd still go on because they love music and didnt just decide one day "Duh hey, I wanna be a famous rapper/musician", and release a crappy album 2wks later. Now don't get me wrong, I dont have anything against rap, but some of it shouldn't be classified under rap. Its commercialized sh!t

They complain LP are commercial puppets. And are they trying to tell me all the other rap and pop crap MTV plays are not commercial puppets? Rap and pop are the 2 genres that are about nothing but commercialism, most of them aren't in it for the love of the music. Rappers are famous just so they can walk around with jewles going "bling bling" and pop singers want the money to pay someone else to write the music.
