This came about while venting to Derek on MSN about my frustrations with Linkin Park on their musical creativity. I don't feel like they're fulfilling that void in the music. They have emotion, but no creativity. God knows they have talent, and that they can make creative music, but they aren't. Don Gilmore is a factor, but not the end all, be all. There's a word called 'no'. Just my opinion. So this topic is to inspire people here to seek out creative bands. I don't know about anyone else, but when I listen to a CD, I just don't want a CD with a few good tracks on it. I want a CD that blows me the fuck away, and that makes me think that it could change the landscape of music and inspire a new breed of musician, or atleast help in the rebirth of creativity in music. Because, let's face it, creativity in mainstream music is almost dead. There's few bands in the mainstream that challenge the norm of what the average MTV watcher likes. I don't know if that's bad or good, but it's still a fact. Anyways, that's just my music. I guess this topic exists for the purpose of venting your frustrations with the lack of creavitity in some genres, or a particular band, or anything. Or you can list some a band/some bands that you feel are highly creative. !!! Björk Buckethead The Dresden Dolls The Mars Volta Porcupine Tree Sigur Rós The White Stripes
Rage Against The Machine Nine Inch Nails Faith No More Mudvayne Tool Refused Dream Theater Meshuggah Early KoRn and Limpbizkit (serious.)
Incubus is one band that sticks out in my mind when I think of creativity in music. They continue to change and take creative steps with every album. On the album, Morning View, the guitarist Mike used a Japanese instrument similar to a banjo called a ky-oto on the song "Aqueous Transmission". Not only does Incubus have creativity in the studio, but they use a majority of it in their live sets. Last July I saw Incubus in concert and between songs they would improvise. They also changed up songs like "Drive" with piano and "Vitamin" with a three drummer drum solo (Brandon Boyd on djemble and bongos, Jose on drums, and Ben Kenney on secondary drum set).
I saw them in Manchester last year and they did the exact same thing, it was absolutally amazing, it was probably the best gig I have ever been to, I love every second from start to finish. So here's my list of creative bands: Red hot chili peppers Incubus Mudvayne Slipknot Nine inch nails
Gorillaz Nine Inch Nails Mindless Self Indulgence Head Automatica Marilyn Manson The White Stripes Incubus System of a Down
Yea , incubus comes first in my mind when i think of creative.. But my few other bands are : Red hot chilli peppers Rage against the machine Audioslave Radiohead
Don't make me laugh, please. Sure, the lyrics can be poetic here and there, but come on. Other than that, they're just like every other pop-punk band out there.
Sigur Ros and Radiohead are pretty sweet... you peeps should also look up Sufjan Stevens....the guy can pratically play every damn instrument ever invented. Gorillaz new cd is pretty creative...just a bit hard to get into. Even though I very much agree with what the thread starter is saying, If you think about it...nearly everything has been done in music already. I remember when my friend and I first got started making music...and everytime I thought of something I thought no one has ever done....my friend would pop in a cd of one of our favorite artist who already did what I thought up. So in a sense...I think Casey is right in saying there is less creativity than there used to be....but I think it is also because people are starting to run out of ideas. Personally,I think the mentality of a band strictly being composed of a singer...drummer...guitarist... and bassist kind of restricts what artists can do with their music. Its been done for over 50 years....maybe when people start to rethink what a 'band' can be....music will regain creativiy.
I have to say the thing that probably annoys me the most is when a band as one, really great interesting song and then the rest of their material is pretty unoriginal (the Lido Venice comes to mind...) or even worse, uninteresting. Creative bands... Dresden Dolls Tori Amos (Under the Pink, at least...haven't heard any of her other albums) Queen (mostly their older material) Sleater-Kinney Refused (especially The Shape of Punk to Come) The Mars Volta Gorillaz STS-era AFI (I bet a bunch of people disagree with this one, but whatever)
I agree with you on LP Casey...lets hope with their next record they get a better producer and start expanding their sound. Somehow I've moved past LP, yet I still have some sort of connection to them...maybe because I think they have the potential to do some great things if they gave themselves the chance. Here's Some creative bands: The Dillinger Escape Plan Porcupine Tree Opeth Pink Floyd Dream Theater The Mars Volta SOAD Tool Isis Metalwood (funk/jazz, but I freakin love this band)
Okay, dude, even I think you're obsessed with the band. And that's coming from me. Nine Inch Nails The Mars Volta Pink Floyd Refused Radiohead Dresden Dolls
