I think he was referring to the fact that Canada was one of the few countries in which it was legal to download MP3's. [/b][/quote] As far as I know, in most countries its legal to download Mp3's. It's illegal in most countries, however, to share them with others when you aren't the one holding the rights.
They could catch you. I remember a few years ago where a teenage girl in NYC was sued for thousands of dollars after downloading a few songs. I have 1000s of downloaded songs and they haven't caught me yet, so, yeah. It would really suck if the RIAA ended up jailing every civilian who downloaded music.
most of the stuff i download, i wouldn't buy even though i couldn't download it. If I am a real fan of a band, like LP, i buy the cd, i don't download it. So i think most people will still buy cd's, if they really like the music. There was this one case, i think in Norway, where a student got sued for downloading stuff, and had mp3's worth loads of money. But the thing is, he did'nt make that much money, so he could only afforded a fraction of the music if he did'nt download it, and therefor wouldn't buy it anyway...

ewww. no more downloading music. oh well, i don't think Canada has the money to enforce that. i mean, i doubt they're going to try and get big ol' investigations on the go, to stop people from downloading music. but the way i think they catch you, is like someone said earlier, through your ip in a cookie. but also, when you download from someone, a packet of data is sent to them, as well as received. this packed of data is stored in some form in a file, with minimal information about your computer. i studied TCP/IP for a bit. like to receive the song, the other computer has to know where it is sending it. so your computer basically sends a bit of information to the other, and it's just put in some useless file. regardless, i know nothing of what the information is (probably like IP, ports used, file sent), and where it is stored EDIT: and the only way i think they'd have this info, is if you yourself downloaded a song from one of the Canadian Music Industry people who are trying to persecute music downloaders. or someone working for them. who the hell are these guys kidding anyway? they're not gonna do diddly about people downloading music. it's canada we live in for goodness sakes! our music industry is a push-over! haha, i received a message from the Canadian Recording Industry awhile back on Kazaa, telling me to stop downloading music because it was infringing something or other, copyright garbage, not fair to the artists, and told me to go to there site. so i continued to download music. 2 years later, i still continue, unharrassed about it.
