The past year or so i have noticed alot of people have these black hair brushed across their face, black make up, etc. Whats with the new image. IMO it looks ridiculous and in some cases abosolutely hilarious. I always thought eyeliner, etc was for chicks but obviousl i was wrong. :wth: I know its just my opinion but its a pretty weird direction everything is heading. Hopefully everyone doesn't jump on the bandwagon. Heres an hair example. i hate to think where we are going to be in 20 years.
Every rock "era" so to speak has an image with it. I think this era's image has really "evolved" into a whole "culture" [it's late so couldn't think of a better word] of sorts where you not only like the music, you dress their way, talk their way, think their way, etc. Just think about it. You know every era had their look: 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and now the 21st century. It's nothing new, but like I said, it's just grown into something so much more I guess. And maybe the fact that it's appealing to a much broader crowd makes things confusing and questionable. I mean, it sucks when I'm at Hot Topic to buy a shirt and the girl next to me is spending $200 worth of merch to deck herself out completely. Some people go too far on perfecting an image. As much as people like to talk shit about teenie bopper rocker chics/guys, they can be just as bad. People brand people way too quickly nowadays and I do it too, don't get me wrong, but ehh...what can I say? I mean, I'm working on it, but change is not easy to come. I like Refused and Linkin Park -- a lot of people find that appauling. Me, I find it open-minded. You just have to be you and not copy everyone else because you know it'll get you friends. You can still be unique today in the world of trendy-whores. P.S. Hair and makeup is not new: David Bowie, Kiss, The Cure, need I say more?
I see what you're saying, but personally I don't really give a fuck. If that's how people want to dress, people can dress that way. Now me, I enjoy tie-dyed stuff waaay to much to do the all-black Hot Topic thing. But if everyone else wants to wear bondage pants and dye their hair black, who cares? The 90s had flannel grunge kids, the 80s had disco and hair metal, the 70s and 60s had hippies and punks. Ten years from people will be onto something entirly new (catsuits and tu-tus, perhaps?)
It's just a look, who really cares? It has nothing to do with the music, it shouldn't affect your views on the music at all. My hair is naturally black and i have it slightly like the guy in the front of the picture you posted, but that doesn't mean Im trying to fit into a scene or anything, that's just how I like my hair. Maybe that's how they like their hair? It shouldn't matter what the artist looks like. As for makeup and eyeliner being for girls, guys have been wearing eyeliner for a VERY long time. Some examples were already listed by Vampire.
Yeah, people who dress like that don't bother me...it's when they put on the paper-white face makeup on though that scares the shit out of me
hm.. But it's often so that people call other people 'wannabe's' just because they don't have the ideal look of what like a rockfan might have. that's really redicilous.
Don't get me wrong, I really love rock/punk music. But a lot of rock/punk singers (Avril Lavign for example, sp?) claim that they aren't into labels/being labeled, etc. Yet they go ahead and create an image of themsleves that so easily fits into the "rock/punk" label. The hypocrisy--not their music or even that label itself-- bothers me. The fact that they are so against stereotypes but abide by them anyway... One thing I can respect about LP is that they don't create an image of themselves that fits into that punk/rock look just because thats what all rock/punk artists are doing.
I love how he used Funeral for a Friend. If it bothers you that much, don't look at the people. It's their choice; if that's how they want to dress and look, let them. You're not going to do anything to change what they choose to do. It all has to do with "scene" nowadays, anyway. Your scene is defined (sometimes) by how you look and what you wear.
BRAVO!! If you were truely concerned about it, you would've realized that it's all about the music..not the appearance
Were you talking to me? If you were, I never said that the way they looked bothered me. I said the hypocrisy of claiming that you're about all about being different while going around dressing/acting the way everybody else in your clique/genre/category is acting is what bothers me. If not, apologies for the misunderstanding.
Ah, ok, since you used the word "you" directly below me without quoting anyone, I assumed you was tallking to one person
I personaly like this look that these bands are sporting. It doesn't really bother me what they look like atal but i like the look. And IMO, Make-Up is fine on guys, doesn't bother me in the slightest. It can suit many men and many men have worn make up for years. If they want to wear make-up and have long black hair then that's fine by me

Boy George for crying out loud!
I totally agree, but I have to admit that the long black hair in the face that is so prevalent in emo bands really sickens me.
Oh well. People change. Music changes. Images change. What's popular changes. At least we have the memories and the music.
