Why do I hear so much crap about "this isn't metal" or, as Phantom Duck said, "Whoever calls that nu-metal deserves to be executed." And there are people who refuse to listen to certain genres because they're bad. Quit with the fricking labeling. For one, nu-metal is a very fluid category. Most music can be placed under multiple genres. Nu-metal happens to be a very broad (or narrow, depending on how you see it) category. It changes from person to person, much like anything else. And another thing: while I do not choose to listen to certain types of music, it is because I have tried a wide sampling of that category and made my decision. However, there's usually an exception or two per genre. Example: Most country irritates me, but I love some of Shania Twain's music. And while rap is generally a good way to piss me off, I still like Eminem's "Lose Yourself". As for Muzak...well, that's because I hate going to the dentist. It probably has its good points, but things like that are hard to notice when your dentist is poking away at your mouth with sharp objects. Sorry. Had to get that off my chest.
Eh, genre's are just for categorial purposes, if you get a genre wrong it's not a big deal, especially if it's something new that you haven't heard before. How are you supposed to define it if you're not familiar with everything inside the genre?
I don't label bands based on how other people label them. I label them based on how I think they should be labeled.
Same with me. [/b][/quote] me 3. All these subgenres are so rediculous...I hate people who say o that's not that genre and who go nuts about it.
What the hell, did you even read what i was talking about? I said the new Papa Roach was alternative rock, not nu metal, and by the way, i never said it's bad. I know it doesn't matter what genre a band belongs to, but wouldn't you call someone crazy if they called Britney progressive metal?
I use genres to categorize my music, I have such a large variety of styles that I generally listen to so I use genres and subgenres to classify them with ease of identification. I like to listen to metalcore one day, death metal tomorrow, thrash metal another, progressive metal today, classical the next, nu-metal on the weekends, noisecore on other days, etc etc. (just an example, I don't have an actual schedule ). So people take this concept to an extreme and really pressure on everyone to use the idea the same as they would. That's how I see it, at least.
Yah labelling bands is a tricky thing to do. Everyone has their own opinion of what a band is, i mean there is the obvious bands such as hatebreed and the deftones, those two are definitely metal bands. But when it comes to groups like linkin park and limp bizkit it is tricky on what they are. Personally i call them nu-metal because nu-metal to me is rap and rock blended into one sound. But i mean the next person would probably disagree with me. But i've heard bands like puddle of mudd catagorized as nu-metal and i dont see how.
Labelling music isn't a bad thing, as long as it's kept simple and we don't get any more people coming up with bullshit along the lines of 'post-punk industrialcore' and the like.
