I actually think Mudvayne is 'Math Metal'. You know, complicated lyrics and whatnot. ... I'll shut up now.
Old school metal? Newer metal? Modern day metal; Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God, Dredg, Spineshank (slightly), Corrosion of Conformity, Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, etc?
No, that's Chevelle. :chemist: [edit] Avenged Sevenfold is metalcore, not metal. [edit2] See what I mean? I hate labels.
i don't even try anymore there's just too many kinds of rock pop rock, metal, alternative metal, nu metal, hard rock, gothic rock, screamo, punk, emo, just goddamnit! rock is rock ok thank you very much i'm done *walks off stage*
Casey's right. Lets make a chart: Rock:Jimi Hendrex, Lynrd Skynrd, The Beatels, Elvis. Punk:The Ramones, The Cure, The Clash Alternitave:Linkin Park, KoRn, And the rest of the bands that came after the 80's. [/b][/quote] No love for the Pixies? The Allah of Alternative?
I think defining rock is pointless because there is no real "rock" music anymore, everything has been shifted into a subgenre of some kind. That said, when people over the age of 25 ask me what kind of music I listen to, or what kind of music is played by a band on my shirt or something, I usually just say "rock" because that's so much easier then trying to explain subgenres...
I agree. "Rock" itself is dead, but rock as a whole will survive in those sub genres and whatever. It's just like in the 80's, people said that "Punk" was dead. Well, yeah it was, but there was "Hardcore" which is a sub genre of "Punk" and now we have the "Pop Punk"
That's some serious rock, there. There are so many types/groups/genres/sub-genres out there, it's hard to label anything anymore. I say just leave it at rock like they do at Tower Records.

I think that the term ROCK is really difficult to define, but in my opinion I do listen to rock music although I do not listen to Led Zeppelin and stuff. I'm more into that 90s stuff like the Lemonheads and Goo Goo Dolls at the moment (usually I listen to Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine (I know that's crossover, but for me it's rock), Linkin Park, System of a down) and I wouldn't say that only bands like led zeppelin are rock. I would say rock music just develops like every other kinda music, too. There are many different forms of rock music, but to me they're all (more or less) ROCK
i think Rock music is the harder, but popular stuff that is out. but it is very general. i personally dont agree w/ ppl saying that Nelly Fratado is really rock, but ppl sut things under strange catagorizations. but because Rock is soooo inclusive/general these days is y we have sooooooooooooooooooooooooo many sub-generas(i.e. metal, heavy metal, death metal, goth metal; punk, pop-punk, hard-core punk; emo, screamo; nu metal, rap-rock; soft-rock; hard-rock) i could go on and on. it is rediculous. Rock is the general blanket that we now classify 1/3 of the music out there(there is also country and R&B/rap). it is a gerneralization
I don't bother with all these damn classifications. LP and the modern bands are rock but aren't rock n roll. My classifications of modern music: Metal Rock Punk Rap RnB
I decided to make a evolution chart for rock/alt. and punk. Punk:The Sex Pistoles-The Cure-The Ramones-The Clash-Green Day-Anti Flag-NoFx-Rise Against-Good Charlote-Sum 41-Simple Plan Rock:Elvis-Skynrd-The Beatles-Jimi Hendrix-Led Zepplen-Dave Bowie-Montley Crue-GnR-Metallica-Nirvanna-Korn-Limp Bizkit-Linkin Park Rock Is Dead. Long live paper and sissors.
^ Yes, long live paper and scissors. OK, waidaminute ... I'm a little confused here. You're saying that rock is dead, but you classify Limp Bizkit, Korn and Linkin Park as rock? EDIT : Ooops, I didn't see the word 'evolution' there.
