On another forum, I was just called un American for being against the 2nd amendment, the right to bear arms. While I don't support much this country does, I find it offensive that I would be called un American for something stupid like that, because after all, I AM an American. Damn proud of it like some people? Nope, but calling me un American would be like calling a hershey bar un-chocolatey. Anyways, that's not my reason for making this topic. Lets have a discussion and see what your opinion on guns and gun control is.

My views pretty much been said in the last paragraph. Pro gun people (let's just call them, ohh...., idiots) say that we need to own guns to make America safer. Yes, awesome logic! Let's make the world a safer place by giving everyone a deadly weapon! The idiots don't realize why there's so much gun crime in America. Even if you're a convicted felon, getting a gun is easier than getting a prostitute with a 100 dollar bill hanging out your zipper (and I don't speak from experience :shifty:) Sure...gun stores such as Wal-Mart and other stores run a background check. But not at gun shows or private sales. There's no background check. You can walk into a gun show with some money and walk out with an assault rifle even if you're a convited murderer out on parole.
And the NRA is a group that deserves to have their 1st amendment rights unconstitutionally taken away. "Oh, these kids at Columbine just shot their school up. Hey, guess what! Let's hold a pro-gun rally in that town right after the incedent!" ARE THESE GUYS ####### MORONS? out of respect for the families that lost their children to gun violence, you don't hold a ####### pro-gun rally.

I'm not saying outlaw guns completely. What I am saying is have much stricter gun control laws. I can't sell you my car without first filing all sorts of paperwork with the government to hand over the title. So why should a gun, a deadly weapon. be any different? And arming the public is NOT the answer to gun violence. The fact I live in a state where the right to carry consealed weapons is legal scares the crap out of me. The idiot response would be to get a gun myself. Well if some hoosier decides to shoot me for no reason, my own weapon won't do me much good when I'm DEAD, will it? Nope!

You're right in that gun control needs to be a lot tighter. I'm not that well informed on the issue, however, so I'll leave it at that.

"Bowling For Columbine" is a great source of information for guns, I suggest everyone watches it. Moore also makes Charlton Heston look like a jackass. It's a terribly controlled situation, though.

I agree with you, a gun is the most dangerous thing you can own. If you ever get a gun, you'll end living with it, and all of its consequences.

"Guns aren't bad. In fact, Jesus and Moses used guns to combat the Egyptians!"

I love it when I can throw "Family Guy" quotes into something.

Anyway, I don't think anyone should be allowed to own a gun unless they're a licensed hunter. Owning a gun for protection is just stupid because that's only adding to the problem.

I agree with what you have all said so far, owning a gun is just trouble, full stop. There are other ways of protecting your family than owning a loaded weapon.

Agreed, gun ownership is out of hand. Owning a gun puts family members, children and others at risk. A fair percentage of guns used in crimes are stolen, thus the idea that a gun protects people is non-existant. I'm all for a handgun ban. They serve no useful purpose, and are meant soley to kill people. Hunting Rifles, you need a hunting license, maybe shotguns. I'm also all for the concept of requiring all guns to have a handle that checks fingerprints to activate, which they have but for some ungodly reason (probably related to money) haven't been implemented. Assault rifles are already banned, as they should be, and should remain to be.

I agree. We have stricter gun laws in Canada, and there are less common murders/shootings here. Especially after 9/11, things like this should be re-thought.

That's because Charlton Heston is a jackass...

Your right, it totally is. Its not the fact that guns are made too available, casue Moore proved that per capita canadians have more guns than the Americans. The way that it is contorlled is terrible and for some reason alot of americans seem to be living in fear.

I just have no problem with guns. I know they aren't good, and can do unnecessary harm when in the posession of stupid mother####ers, but I believe, if you have a gun, also have a just purpose. Don't kill the "preps" who teased you at school because "they don't understand you", or go to work and shooting your boss because he fired you. Buy a gun to protect your property from a burgular. As long as you have no malicious intent, get one. One day you'll be caught in a situation in which you will be the victim and wish you could do something to stop it.

I completely understand and agree with what you are saying. Sometimes I worry that I'll be in a situation where I might need to defend myself/friends/family/roommates and I'll be screwed cause I won't have anything for protection. I've actually thought about taking lessons and getting one. I'm not sure about what my parents would think, though.

First off, guns don't kill people. People kill people. That said, I'm for gun control, to the extent that violent crime is reduced, but not to the extent that every citizen is completely defenseless. There's certain situations that owning a gun is completely necessary, and other situations where it's not needed. Weapons like handguns aren't meant for sport, and as such should have tighter screws on 'em, just like assault weapons. Rifles...less so, but require a licence and other restrictions, such as keeping them unloaded unless they're actively being used. Hunting is a sport enjoyed by many, and what I'm suggesting isn't meant to destroy this sport, therefore hunting rifles are still OK in my books...however, the more dangerous types of guns (handguns, assault weapons, automatics) are overkill for the average citizen and should be restricted...

    My $0.02...

True, but guns are the easiest way to kill someone.
