Somehow I can't imagine an art school student taking part in underground rap battles.

He did a brief battle rap with Racca on the Wake Up Show in 2001, but Mike isn't that good at freestyle, and he ran out of ideas during his 2nd verse.

People do that all the time. Mostly of songs they think no-one's heard/will hear. And by the time people hear it the radio show freestyle is probably long forgotten.

I don't think he had time. I read in some of the interview they did with him, he described how hard it was balancing his school work and writing music and driving to practice.

I get that a lot, I have the whole Wake Up show with Mike actually, the way that happened was, whenever someone comes on the show, they have to bust a freestyle. Mike just went and did half of Dedicated for that. But, the battle rap was like, Racca did a verse, Mike did one, Racca did another one, then Mike started again but gave up. The Dedicated "freestyle" was like separate.

Wake Up show is a radio program, but they always film it as well, and there's TV specials about it sometimes on MTV, etc. Think like the Howard Stern show, how it's a radio show that gets TV exposure.
