Hey all, I have a question for anyone who might be able to answer... Basically, i'm in charge of creating a huge DVD (Keaton would be familair with it) for my school. It's called the "DVD Video Yearbook". Basically, it's a compilation of video covering school events (dances, battle of the sexes, battle of the bands) and sports. Throughout the entire thing, we also have a storyline/movie (usually it's a parody, this year it was God Father, last year was the Matrix). Anyways... We're looking into including big name bands into our movie (their music), we're wondering...are their royalties/fees to be paid to use their music? Who do we look for to pay, and what are the prices? Etc. etc. Any and all information would help!
I don't think they'll mind if it's just a school yearbook thing... ask your teacher or principal if it's a big deal.
You should ask your principal before doing it. I assume it's alright but just in case you should ask.
Some more info.: The principals and school administration aren't the problems, it's the bigger record companies that we, as a school, would be worried about. The administration are the people who brought the subject to attention...using such music is fine with them, they just want to know if it's fine with the record labels/artists that we use the music of. Also, the school video yearbook is sold, but all the profits go right back to our public school, not into any private or commercial hands...
Some kids at my school did that, and they had Numb playing on the menus, among other songs, and I doubt they paid royalties, but they didnt sell them for profit, the money they got from sales went to charity. But, don't do what these 2 kids did. They made a secret section on the DVD and in this hidden sections they put photos of a girl at our school participating in a wet t-shirt contest on spring break in the Bahamas (yes she is naked, no you can't have the pictures) and they also wrote a song about our principal who was having an affair with another student (our school is fvucked up) and stuck that in the hidden section too. The school found out, they got an F on the project and werent allowed to walk during graduation.
So you're the one? The one who makes them? And yes I go to Troy. And also, to clear things up, what he's talking about isn't a tiny in-class assignment or project, it's something that's shown to the whole school in the gym on loud speakers.

Wow, you go to Elie's school? How was the Lil' John part? ...
Does putting the money towards book, desks and sports uniforms count as a profit? Or because they're for the school is it discounted?
haha, wow, people from Troy come to the LPA? Troy people, isn't the DVD Video Yearbook like the biggest thing of the year? I'm next year's Historian, and I'm director of the entire thing. Also, I hired Keaton last year (For the GODFATHER themed yearbook) to do the flash cartoon intro for Girl's Tennis...the Lil' John one...it was great.
Darn it! I was just going to ask for the pics until I saw that I couldn't.
Thats pathetic. Anyways, as long as you're not making any profit it should be alright.
Darn it! I was just going to ask for the pics until I saw that I couldn't.
Wow. That's sad.
I can't see a problem with that. If the labels have a problem, then they really are greedy mofos.
Yeah...haha, how would it look on the news? "RIAA sues public highschool for using copyrighted music in one of their assemblies" haha..
