Computer glitches?

For the computer experts, I've got some questions that need answering.

    1. I've heard that "svchost.exe" is a Microsoft service host and some guy on the LPMB tells me it's a harmful trojan. Which one is it?

    2. What the heck is "C:\Windows\kernell\"? I have this as my shared folder in WinMX when my shared folder should be "C:\My Music". Also, "kernell" inundates me with archives on a daily basis, with names ranging from "sex nude porno.exe" to "Unreal tournament.exe". I didn't even download any of this crap.

    *confused* :(

I'm not exactly an expert, but I'm guessing someone hacked into your computer and renamed some of your folders. Just do a virus scan or even get a cleaner in case of trojans. It'd be also useful to get some anti spyware software just in case. I hope I helped.. :wth:

Not sure what svchost.exe is though.

svchost.exe is required for your computer to run. Trust me. It's a Microsoft Windows XP service.

Not sure what the other thing is.

Only advice I can give is ask a professional, and do a virus scan.

svchost.exe runs all your services (see Config Pannel, Admin Tools, Services for a list). If you kill it, you kill your PC  .

As for Kernell, usually a kernel is the basis of an OS script... But I might be wrong. Run a virus scan, as Duffster said.

Yeah, and if your PC keeps acting weird, e-mail Symantec.

Sure you don't have a horny brother who likes to download porn? And yes, run a virus check and in the worst case email Symantec.

Turns out I've got a virus called Win32.Blaxe.A on my hard drive. It spreads through P2P file-sharing programs like Kazaa and I'm pretty sure I got it from Kazaa because I've always had WinMX and they never gave me any viruses or worms. Kazaa (unlike Kazaa Lite) is full of spyware as well, so you should all be watching out for this virus. It has pretty high damage potential. All these .exe files I was talking about are copied to a folder called "C:\WINDOWS\kernell" and that was my problem. :argh:

I used to get those Kernell errors all the time from Internet Explorer, and they'd eat away my I.E. and anything open on the task bar. It annoyed me so much. Computers don't like me. I swear.

I think I have a virus that I got from Kazaa, as well. Kazaa is evil.

Btw, UT is a FPS game. :p

    sooo this got sorted??

service host . exe is windows

as for the other, you should never be downloading things from anywhere without a good antivirus.

if you search google you can get free online scans from some sites so look in to that if you must push on without some auto script blocker anitvirus app...follow all instructions on removing any viruses or they may not be correctly uninstalled.

then do spyware scan with spybot sd or adaware.

    god speed :D

oh incase you wanted to know, the 'kernal' is how the operating system interacts with the hardware of your pc. the operating system the graphics and stuff are how you interface with the kernal.

OK here goes a long explanation

Those files that were being created were because of a virus you got from a FILE. KaZaA DOESN'T install virii. It does install a file called cd.clint which is commonly referred to as 'spyware' - which tells people your internet habits so that they can get information based on the age group or whatever you entered in KaZaA.

SVCHOST.exe is a critical process, but it can get virused. I know, because it happened to me. The only way I know of that it can become virused is from the Half Life 2 Source Code leak. It enables a provate channel on IRC to remotely control your computer. Often doing it at about 1kb/s so that you don't notice any changes. There is no way to get rid of this. A reformat would help, but other than that it's harmless. Unless of course you notice that things on your hard drive are becoming arranged in such a way that it wasn't you.

Point being. Get an antivirus. Scan your computer for spyware. Do the whole lot, clean it right out. I guarantee it will run faster. Here's a link to a topic Avenger and I posted awhile back. Here's some links...

    AVG Antivirus Free Edition
    -------------------------------------------
Very good and is free for life. Updates quite often and barely takes up memory.

    Grisoft.com

    Ad Aware Personal
    --------------------------------------------
Very good and fast. Searches for spyware etc.
    Lavasoft.de

    System Mechanic
    --------------------------------------------
Very good tool for many things. Newer versions include an extremely good pop up blocker.

    iolo.com

    Spybot Search & Destroy
    ------------------------------------------------
Less fancy, but just as effective as Ad Aware.

There's more stuff... I'll post a complete topic on this stuff on Easter break. Hope this helps :)

Thanks Neil, and everyone else. ^_^

The free virus scan from Trend Micro is awesome. It identifies all your corrupted files and get rids of the virus for you. Now my WinMX is back to normal. :D

When I press Ctrl + Alt + Del, I don't see svchost.exe in my running applications either. So that must've been a trojan. :wth:

Ctrl + Alt + Del does not show you all the applications, just the ones you can shut down there. Type MSCONFIG at run" (start menu"), and you'll see which SVCHOST.exe starts with Windows.
