Tonight, the legendary Wembley Stadium is playing host to Linkin Park, for what is set to be the biggest headlining live show the band has played to date (i.e. outside of festival events). Tickets for this show were made available to the public on November 22, 2024, and they were shockingly (to outsiders perhaps) all gone within the day! Fans have come from all over the world to be part of this historic event in the band's career, including members of the Linkin Park Association team.

It hardly needs stating that Linkin Park has an extensive history when it comes to performances in London; in terms of the number of shows it has hosted, it is second only to Los Angeles, their home turf. Their very first show in England was at a nightclub venue called Tutu's, on the King's College London Students' Union's Strand Campus on January 11, 2001. This was a stop on a European promotional tour at the beginning of 2001 which marked their first headline shows as Linkin Park, with the debut album Hybrid Theory having been released just months earlier. Footage from this show can be briefly glimpsed in a few pieces of Linkin Park media from around that time, most notably in the music video for "Points of Authority".

On January 12, 2001, Linkin Park spent their day doing a London press run which included a stop at Yalding House, home of BBC's Radio 1. In a studio space there, the band performed songs from Hybrid Theory live for a program called The Evening Session. Recordings of "Papercut", "Points of Authority" and "In the End" were released as B-side tracks on the Crawling, Papercut and In the End single CDs (respectively), with the "Papercut" performance also appearing on iTunes as part of a 2006 digital edition of Hybrid Theory exclusive to that platform (by 2013, it was available on various other digital music platforms, including Spotify). All three live tracks were eventually included together on a disc called B-Side Rarities as part of the 20th Anniversary Edition of Hybrid Theory in 2020. A few seconds of footage showing the band recording these performances is included on Linkin Park's 2001 DVD Frat Party at the Pankake Festival.

Later in the year, on March 8, while supporting Deftones on their Back to School European tour, Linkin Park made a stop at London's BBC Studios to film an appearance on Britain's record chart television program Top of the Pops. On the show, the band played a very brief set consisting of "Papercut", "In the End" and a shortened arrangement of "Crawling".

"Papercut" live on BBC's Top of the Pops in 2001.

Later in the same tour leg, Linkin Park performed their set opening for Deftones at Docklands Arena. Recordings of "Papercut", "Points of Authority" and "A Place for My Head" from this show were included on releases like the In the End: Live & Rare EP for Japan and the 2002 Special Edition of Hybrid Theory, as well as various single CDs. As with various other shows from around this time, video footage from this performance was used in the "Points of Authority" music video mentioned earlier.

From April through to early June, Linkin Park was on a world-spanning tour to promote Hybrid Theory. It included stops in the U.S., Australia, Japan, Germany, and - for the 21st and final show of the tour - London. There, on June 4, 2001, the band performed a show at Brixton Academy. This show is notable because band member Chester Bennington delivered a live debut of "Morning After", a song he had written which would eventually be recorded and released as a B-side / bonus track for his 2009 Dead By Sunrise album Out of Ashes. Bennington performed the song solo as part of the encore segment, singing and playing acoustic guitar. No recording of this specific performance exists, but there is a recording from when he played it again at a show in Berlin on September 12 later in the year, during a European tour which ran throughout that month:

On September 16, 2001, on that same European headline tour leg, Linkin Park returned to Docklands Arena. This show was apparently intended to be filmed for a live DVD release and, although that did not end up happening, a workprint version eventually made its way online. Recordings of "With You" and "High Voltage" from this set (with Evidence and Rakaa Iriscience of Dilated Peoples joining Linkin Park on-stage for the latter) were included on the Linkin Park Underground 2.0 CD released exclusively to official fan club members at the end of 2002. In 2020, these same live tracks were included on the LPU Rarities disc for the 20th Anniversary Edition of Hybrid Theory.

Video recording of "High Voltage" performed at the Docklands Arena.

In 2003, Linkin Park toured to promote their sophomore album Meteora, including a few appearances in London, for both headline shows and other promotional duties. As part of the LP Underground Tour, the band played a show at Brixton Academy on March 5, 2003, two days after the release of Meteora. With this set, they introduced the London crowd to many new songs from their new album: "Session", "Don't Stay", "Somewhere I Belong", "Lying From You", "Faint", "From the Inside", "Hit the Floor", and "Easier to Run".

Footage edited together from performances of "Easier to Run" on the 2003 LP Underground Tour.

After this, Linkin Park made return to the British TV program Top of the Pops on March 6. Band member Mike Shinoda was unwell on this day, but that didn't seem to hold the band back from delivering a solid performance for the show. A shortened version of "A.06"a track heard in promotional videos for Meteora, and also included on the Linkin Park Underground 2.0 fan club CD—was performed, marking its live debut. In September 2016, Linkin Park Live released soundboard audio from this performance as part of their LPLive X 10th anniversary celebration. Among other things, Phoenix and Rob Bourdon can be heard playing parts of "Dialate", a very early Xero demo that was eventually released for Hybrid Theory's 20th anniversary.

Full soundboard recording of the band's soundcheck and performance at Top of the Pops 2003.

Then, on March 8, Linkin Park appeared on another British TV program, CD:UK, specifically the "Headliners" segment, filmed at Riverside Studios in London. Being another promotional TV appearance, the band again performed a brief set consisting of mostly new songs from Meteora, as well as "In the End", "A Place for My Head" and "One Step Closer". Linkin Park's CD:UK performance also saw yet another "A.06" performance, apparently by audience demand.

"From the Inside" live on ITV's CD:UK program.

In August and September of 2003, Linkin Park were on tour in Europe. In the midst of this, the band appeared at the 2003 Kerrang! Awards on August 21. At this event, they performed three songs, while also taking home an award for "Best International Act". While only "Faint" was broadcast live, the band also played "From the Inside" and—again—"A.06", making London the city with the most performances of the song by a long shot, as it was only played a select number of times in 2003.

Linkin Park performing "Faint" and accepting their award for "Best International Act" at the 2003 Kerrang! Awards.

Linkin Park's fifth and final appearance in London for 2003 was during a short fall tour in the UK which closed out their year. As part of this tour leg, on November 22, 2003, the band played a headline show at Wembley Arena ... a venue right next to the stadium they'll be performing at tonight! This performance saw a couple of great performances from the hip-hop side of the band's catalog at that point, with a full performance of the X-Ecutioners collaboration "It's Goin' Down", and an extended version of "Nobody's Listening," where Mike Shinoda followed up the second verse with his first verse from a then-unreleased song "Standing in the Middle" (eventually included on the Linkin Park Underground 4.0 fan club CD in 2004). That extra verse was backed by a mash-up of elements from several notable hip-hop tracks, including "The Seed (2.0)" by the Roots and "If I Can't" by 50 Cent.

"Nobody's Listening" live from Manchester, the night before the band's Wembley Arena performance in London.

For the Minutes to Midnight tour cycle, the band first visited London in early May of 2007 for three promotional performances ahead of the album's May 14 release, one of which was an intimate full-length performance at the London Astoria club on May 2. The band returned to London at the beginning of 2008 to perform two standard headlining dates, with back-to-back performances on January 28 and January 29 at what would become their go-to venue in London, the O2 Arena, closing out their first tour leg for that year. These were the band's first performances in London to be recorded for Digital Souvenir Packages, the band's official audio recordings of shows to be directly sold to fans.

For these shows, the band delivered a couple of surprises, the first of which was Mike Shinoda performing a short piano cover of Rihanna's hit single "Umbrella" after "Numb" on night one. Toward the end of the night two, the band then swapped out the piano ballad version of "Pushing Me Away" for a performance of "In Between," which had only debuted a week prior and would only last until summer of that year. The recording of this "In Between" performance was released on the "Given Up" single later in 2008, and the three songs following in that set—"What I've Done", "One Step Closer" and "Faint"—were also included as additional downloadable tracks for the European Tour Edition release of Minutes to Midnight.

In 2010, to close out the A Thousand Suns South American / European tour leg that spanned October and November, the band once again played back-to-back shows at the O2 Arena, on November 10 and November 11. From the first show, a recording of "The Requiem" was released as the first track on the digital live compilation release A Thousand Suns Live Around the World. On November 11, the band preceded their concert with an LPU Summit, and band members Chester Bennington and Brad Delson treated the fans there to an intimate two-song acoustic set, performing "Leave Out All the Rest" and "The Messenger", before Linkin Park did a short rehearsal which the attendees also got to watch.

Chester and Brad perform "The Messenger" for LPU members.
For 2011, the band's only London show was played at The Roundhouse, a venue that has now hosted two iconic Linkin Park and Mike Shinoda shows. This show is well-known among fans, part of the 2011 iTunes Festival, and it was also livestreamed for fans around the world to watch! This is also the show where Mike and Chester performed their cover of "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele. Proshot video of this performance was made available for purchase on iTunes after the show, and a short EP was released by the band as well. Currently, individual videos of "Numb", "In the End", "Rolling In the Deep", "One Step Closer" and "Crawling" are still available on iTunes for purchase. "Rolling In the Deep" specifically was also uploaded on Linkin Park's YouTube channel.

With The Hunting Party, the band returned again for the O2 Arena for back-to-back shows, closing out their 2014 touring schedule. For the last few songs on night two, the band decided to really cut loose with their crew and fans for their last show of the year. On "What I've Done", Joe's tech Warren Willis took over on the turntables, and after his guitar solo, Brad handed his guitar to his tech Benjamin Chandler, letting him play the rest of the song and his own solo. Phoenix messed with his bass tech Ted by running away from him during a bass switch before "Bleed It Out" as well, prompting Mike to jokingly threaten to drop Ted from the crew if he couldn't catch their bassist and get his instrument. After finally starting the song, the band invited members of the crowd on stage following the drum solo to celebrate the end of the tour and sing along, much like the party we hear in the studio recording!

The encore of night two in London, closing out Linkin Park's touring for 2014.

In 2017, the band put on yet another round of back-to-back performances in London. With no opening act, the band extended their setlists, putting in some extra songs for the fans. These shows offered special appearances from some guests that had collaborated on various songs from One More Light as well. Stormzy appeared at both nights, performing his verse from "Good Goodbye", and Jon Green appeared at the second night, playing guitar and providing vocals to "Nobody Can Save Me". Mike also decided to do something special for the fans on night one, performing the first verse of "Hands Held High" a cappella on the spot before "Invisible". Night one was played at the O2 Arena and the second show was played at the smaller and more intimate O2 Brixton Academy, and recordings of "Nobody Can Save Me", "Leave Out All the Rest" and "Good Goodbye" from this show are part of One More Light Live.

"Hands Held High" performed a cappella in London, recorded by a fan at the end of the catwalk.

Most recently, in terms of London performances, we have two that happened just last year on the From Zero World Tour! London certainly got an amazing show, including a crazy run of songs consisting of "Keys to the Kingdom", "Given Up", and "One Step Closer", all in a row! It also featured the second-ever performance of "Heavy Is the Crown", ahead of Worlds 2024, which was filmed and later put up on the band's YouTube channel. At this point, we were also still getting beautiful performances of "Friendly Fire", "Leave Out All the Rest", and "My December".

"Keys to the Kingdom" live in London in 2024, recorded by our favorite Erynn Halvorson!

Not only did the city get one of the first From Zero shows, but Linkin Park also performed their then-newly-released "Heavy Is the Crown" live at the 2024 Worlds Championship e-sports event for League of Legends, again at the O2 Arena! The band performed an extended version of the song, with a lengthy instrumental bridge following Emily's scream while competing teams were brought out. Little did we know at the time that this would be the first of many competitive events that the song would be used as an anthem for!

"Heavy Is the Crown" performed by the band at the 2024 Worlds Championship.

Aside from the cancellation of the Switzerland show meant for June 20, this From Zero European tour leg has only seen Linkin Park go from strength to strength, a testament to both the live show they have worked so hard on and the band's connection to their worldwide fanbase. Recent performances throughout Germany, and their festival performances in France and Italy have each drawn massive crowds. Linkin Park set a record with their biggest headline show to date in Berlin, which they will be dethroning in short order tonight.

The band was in a playful mood at their latest show in Arnhem in the Netherlands. They performed both "IGYEIH" and "Stained", and the band included some other fun moments: Mike played Eminem's "Lose Yourself" over the intro to "Overflow"; Emily performed an on-the-fly interpretation of "Numb" in the style of Johnny Cash; Mike rapped verse one of "LIES GREED MISERY" during his solo medley to celebrate 13 years of LIVING THINGS (thanks for the shoutout, Mike!); and even Phoenix played bass down in the pit for "Bleed It Out". "Let You Fade" also reclaimed its position in the encore, after "A Place for My Head" had replaced in for the previous two shows.

Mike's solo medley in Arnhem, featuring LPAssociation member @dutchsoldier at 3:09 next to the fan getting a signature!

In terms of the band's London show today, the hype could not be any greater, a combination of the symbolism at performing at the iconic Wembley Stadium venue itself with its history and the fact that it's the biggest show the band has played in their career. With a capacity of around 90,000, Wembley is the largest stadium in the United Kingdom and the second-largest in Europe, beaten only by Barcelona's Camp Nou.

Famous around the world, Wembley Stadium has always been a location for momentous occasions in music. It previously welcomed through music icons such as The Who, David Bowie, Elton John, U2 and Paul McCartney. Among the most notable events to have happened there is the 1985 charity event Live Aid, co-signed and attended by Princess Diana and Prince Charles of Wales, which raised money for famine relief in Ethiopia. Queen’s performance there has come to be regarded as one of the best rock and live music performances in recent music history. Broadcast live to the world, it was watched by 1.9 billion people, 40% of the entire world population in 1985. Michael Jackson also broke records with seven sold-out nights there in 1988, with Prince Charles and his wife in attendance, and even more recently, K-pop group BTS sold out back-to-back nights in 2019, a watershed moment for K-pop's emergence in the Western music consciousness.

Queen's legendary Live Aid performance in 1985.

Expectations and hype for this show are crazy, and while we all hope that the band will do something special, we're all just happy to get a good show. But let's still speculate about special things the band could do! Brad Delson has been with the band backstage for the shows in Milan and Arnhem, which has fueled much speculation. Maybe he will come out and play a song or make some kind of appearance? Maybe the show will be filmed or livestreamed since it's the largest headlining show they've ever played? Will a song have its live debut? We're still waiting for "Unshatter" to finish off the entire From Zero Deluxe Edition. Maybe the band will play a longer extended set? We'll have to wait and see!

LPAssociation will be representing strong at this show as well! With five staff members in attendance, as well as several of our other regulars, it should be a night to remember. Be sure to say hello if you see any of them!

After this show the band is scheduled to head over to Düsseldorf, Germany for another headlining performance before going out on the festival circuit again with performances in Belgium and Poland.

With livestreaming becoming more accessible than ever, fans at home have been able to watch shows on social media via YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram livestreams from attendees. While we are not asking our readers to livestream the show, if anyone reading this finds a stream or is streaming it themselves, let us know so we can watch along with you!

Will you be attending the show? Are you attending any shows this year? If so, have you let people know in the meet-up thread? Come discuss in our forums.

Linkin Park. I know you're in here.

Wembley is gonna be the biggest show outside of a Festival you have EVER done. Your first time playing the Stadium instead of the Arena.

Do you REALLY want to start that show with... Somewhere I Belong? Of all songs? Really?

This really calls for something unique/special/unexpected, but I don't want to expect it

Also, the place got to get absolutely teared down on Two Faced. There is no other way out. Let's make Wembley worth of being Wembley :D

TIL Points of Authority has a music video.

I’ve never seen it before, but that Top of the Pops performance of Papercut makes me incredibly nostalgic. It captures that period so well.

    Great work, y’all.

Spiritbox is still on-stage playing their set right now, there's still time for them to swap "Somewhere I Belong" out for something better if they want

The best part about this for me was taking my nephew to his first ever show, and he had the time of his life. He sang to all the songs (minus the bad words) and even made some friends in our row. A+ night

    Side notes

Mike did a verse from Reading my Eyes, which is amazing

Also the end of Numb was weird as hell

The setlist was pretty safe and standard, the only really confusing part is that they played "Short Moscow intro", but not New Divide. Those two have been played back-to-aback ever since the return. Instead it went "Short Mosow Intro" > "Cut the Bridge".

    Interesting change

APFMH in Wembley is quite iconic.

Watched a bunch of videos and read bunch of feedbacks, seems like it was an amazing show. The pits were also much more active than what the twitch stream made it look like
