I know that most people listen to other bands/artists other than Linkin Park, but what exactly do people listen to? In terms of Nu-Metal, Limp Bizkit comes to mind as someone I listen to other than LP. For Hip-Hop, I listen to Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar... What about y'all? Don't judge my music taste.
Mainly thrash metal. I also listen to a lot of death metal and other nu metal. Mainly just metal. Of all types, but those three are my favorites. Aside from metal, I like classical, and this band called Over the Rhine. And then I like some hip-hop, but very surface level of the genre; I really only ever listen to Eminem and Kendrick, and even then it's not very common.
My favourite songs at the moment are Deb Never's "This Alive" and Night Tapes' "television". In the past couple of months, I've enjoyed new releases from FKA twigs, The Weeknd, Chloe Slater, Daughter, Men I Trust, Kelela, JPEGMAFIA and SAINt JHN. I really appreciate not fitting into a box as far as preferences go
Rock and metal is more or less my comfort zone when it comes to music: Alternative/Prog Rock (Fair to Midland, Dead Letter Circus, Tool, etc.), alt metal (Evans Blue, Breaking Benjamin, Ra, etc.), various "core" subgenres (Fleshwater, Dillinger Escape Plan, Vein, etc.) to name a few. Outside of that sphere, I also enjoy stuff like drum n' bass, 90s EDM, tech-death, industrial and trance. I have my favorite sounds but I like pretty much all kinds.
I'm a big Prog Metal and Prog Rock guy. I discovered Dream Theater in high school, and really fell in love with what the genre has to offer. I listen to a lot of other stuff, but I'd be lying if I said Prog wasn't the majority focus. These are both singles from artists I really like that came out today!
Thrice Dayseeker Holding Absence Sleep Token The Plot in You Bring Me the Horizon (when they aren't total cringey edgelords) In essence, I have a soft spot for bands that aren't afraid of changing up their sound. Wonder where that came from?
I usually have phases of 1-2 months where I mostly listen to albums of one music niche, and then I rotate with other music genres. There is just so much good stuff out there, and switching from one genre to the next is a bit like travelling to me. Lately, been on a alternative / songwriter / indie binge, including artists like Angel olsen Mitski Metric St Vincent The Weather Station The Naked and Famous Next on the schedule, I've got some Jazz / Soul / Funk albums lining up in the pipeline, and then back to Metal for a while. It's constantly evolving
If I were to make a list of artists that call to me on a personal level and/or seriously fascinate me sonically that aren’t Linkin Park… I usually group in two vague ball-parks nowadays. Here is how I’d put it. Pop/Hip-hop Gradient Twenty One Pilots Oliver Tree Glass Animals Missio Still Woozy Half-Alive grandson Gorillaz Pop-Rock/Metal Gradient Enter Shikari Twelve Foot Ninja Nothing More Grim Salvo Wargasm (UK) Weezer (Yes.) The Wrecks Motion City Soundtrack Honorable mentions to Pvris, Dead Poet Society, My Chemical Romance, Celldweller, and Awolnation. I used to love them when I found them in the early 2010’s.
If we're talking individual bands my favorites are Tourniquet Deliverance Metallica Megadeth Death Theocracy System of a Down
Oh yeah, when it comes to all time favourite go-to bands Deftones Enter Shikari Thrice Those are the core ones, beside LP, I've actively followed for the last 10/15 + years, when it comes to new album cycle, attending live shows, etc.
I always come back, aside of LP, to: Foo Fighters Arctic Monkeys Oasis Paramore Twenty-One Pilots Some classical composers like Rimsky Korsakov, Tchaikovsky or Goldberg Variations (from J.S. Bach)
Aside from LP, these artists are always on repeat for me: The Weeknd Bring Me The Horizon (Sempiternal onwards) Bad Omens
Mainly Metal (Various core genres, death metal/slam metal, black metal, thrash, prog, more classic metal etc. ...), Punk and lots of Hardcore-Punk (love the Hardcore scene and its nature). Other than that some Hip Hop and a lot of Drum & Bass. Plus classics like The Beatles and Abba ... and as they've been mentioned already I also love Thrice!
Oh, it's been a while since I've done one of these. If you were to distill me into my non-LP components, it would probably be - Nine Inch Nails - Vienna Teng - Utada Hikaru - Carly Rae Jepsen - Kendrick Lamar - Run The Jewels - Paramore - Nobuo Uematsu/Masayoshi Soken - The Weeknd - City Pop, the whole-ass genre - Bad Omens - The Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack
Interesting to see many people mention Bad Omens. I remember how they were mocked as BMTH wannabes when their first album came out . They've gone a long way. My favorite album is definitely The Death of Peace of Mind.
I like all sorts, which is funny as when I was young, I loved Michael Jackson's music and then when I was a teenager, it was nu-metal that really captured my attention and made me become more interested in music and purchasing CD's. Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water and Linkin Park's Meteora were the first CD's I got with my own money. The early to mid-2000's was just nu-metal and that's all I listened to. However, over time my musical tastes became and are much more varied - I like metalcore, post-hardcore, pop-punk, grunge, industrial, pop, r&b, alternative, rock, metal, electronica, country, folk, jazz, house, dance, etc. I always find around the summer time is when I start listening to more pop/electronic/dance music but mostly I dip into rock/metal. Bands/artists I like that aren't named Linkin Park that I tend to listen to the most and enjoy are: The Rasmus Memphis May Fire The Word Alive A Day To Remember Asking Alexandria PVRIS Mothica Bebe Rexha Charli XCX Dua Lipa Michael Jackson Frank Sinatra Of Mice & Men Alter Bridge Crown The Empire Bring Me The Horizon Bad Omens The Weeknd Dayseeker Sleep Token Dayshell I See Stars Starset Sabrina Carpenter Seether In This Moment HARDY Set It Off Halocene Motionless In White Sleeping With Sirens Nessa Barrett The list goes on but I think it gives an example of the different genres I like to listen to the most.
