Yes I have had two twisted hips, and been to the chiropractor allot in the past 3 years, me and my doc know each other well. and as for 80% of fights end up on the ground, well, I am sure that’s true for reg. peeps, but my teach had us "street fight" basically do whatever you want, or what you can to get the other person on the ground...no rules, cept don’t smack his nuts, gouge his eyes, and break something ;) So all I can say from that experience, was, its the farthest thing from tournament taekwondo style, nothing similar, almost no one in the class kicked besides push kicks or sorry attempts at head shots while coming in on the opponent. I fought 8 times, 5 out of the 8 times some one went down- 2 of those times me and my partner went down together, and the other three I was standing over him knee in his chest fist at his face, before he tapped out.

So for the m-artist, that knows what he is doing, has had real training, and knows how to take some one down fast, 80% doesn’t apply. I agree that real fights are nothing like taekwondo- for me the closer you are, the faster I can end it, thanks to my teacher showing us what to do in an unpredictable, real, nasty fight.[after that every ones ego’s dropped down realizing that we didn’t, know everything] Now kicks, no matter how fast you are, if the person expects it they won’t work. Something else my instructor taught us, an exercise were one person holds a long pad, and the other person is suppose to kick the holder on the side the pad is not on. Every time, people were able to block the kick, because we new it was coming, no matter how fast you are; so if you want to do a kick, make sure it’s unexpected or low, to the balls or my favorite, the knee for a quick take down.

So like every one else said, all the flashy spin kicks and jump 360’s are for sport and showing off, don’t embarrass yourself and throe that when in a real fight; they are easily avoided and countered; you will be down in no time.

I've never been in a real fight, because in my opinion, martial arts is made not for kicking @$$, it's for preventing such a thing. You try to prevent and persuade one person not to fight, as well as yourself. I don't pick fights, or expect them. I'm merely training for the time when I really do need it.

My old instructor is over 40 years old, and has been in a fight once since his martial arts exp. 30 years ago. He was mugged once on the street by 3 people, and took all 3 down. He had no choice, and left the scene un-scaved (sp?). The offenders, as well were only knocked out, he never saw them again but he assured us that he didn't break anything other than their pride.

one-step-sparring is easy, free spep is a little dawnting at fight, but dont worry B) do yuo have to know korian terms, like a writting part to the test? i have to count to ten, know what chest protector is and so on in korian[chest protecter=hogoo]. counting to ten is,
    hanna
    dual
    set
    net
    doset
    yaset
    elgob
    yadle
    ahob
    yal
spelling is off, but thats what they sound like  good luck man!

that doesnt help but, man, thanks...

it's not the patterns that matters now but the 'fight'! 'coz the test is like killing me inside!... ("silent killer" - crucial than those ninjas!!) so i'm kinda scared! i can feel the tense all over my body!! i'd not hurt a fly!!... not my nature, really! fight and blood freak me! (minus the movies, hehe...) :)

actually i'm not sure why i took this class in the first place!!... but nobody had forced me into getting in this class!!.. my choice...

maybe 'coz i'm weak! (that i need a protection?!) :(

    heehee >_>'

When I was younger I had a breif stint of Karate (Tokkotai) - I didn't take it seriously and so dropped out after a while

Then I was eight and started going Judo. I did this for six years and managed to get to Green belt (15th Mon I think) which was awesome. I loved certain combos like Ko-sotogari and osotogari, but definately preferred hard throws like Ippon-seanaggi ^_^

I used to fight in tournaments around the North West and did pretty well altogether - because tournaments are filed by weight class, I got to fight people of all ages and skills which really really helped me get the medals I have (I still have them somewhere I think )

And I've recently started kickboxing...though I doubt that counts as a martial art =P

that's cool, like, everybody's into kickboxing already...

and it's good that u've ur medal - that ur not afraid of fighting in a tournament.... that usually freaks me.... 'though i'm two more to black i've never been in a fight or tournament... i missed the latter last year... 'coz i've been sick for two days!! two is definitely not my lucky number!!!!....

poor guy, or as my teacher would say, "SUCK IT UP! i dont want have to stand over you with smelling sauce!" lol, they dont care if you cry if your older, 12 and up you basicly suck it up, or get yelled at. I mean they are nice people, just very strict in taekwondo. Now all i can say to you is, well, either quit or change your mind, if you are a person like this, then you really do need to know how to defend yourself, but i cant make descissions for you.

Tournaments to me, i never liked, placed 1st at state 3 years in a row, and several silver and gold medals at other tournaments, and 4th place at "Junior Elympics", i was so nervious that one. I quit tournaments and started to work more on real fighting rather than tournament style. I dont think i wil ever do another one again, i haves everal impressive medals, but i never cared for it.

Gosh...tournaments suck and are the best experience at the same time. I'm big and tall, about 160-170 lbs., but I'm on 15 and had to fight adults that were 20-30 years old. Man it was ruthless. Really fun, though, they taught you much and didn't rub it in your face like most teenagers do.

I was going to do judo in summer 2001 but never got round to doing it. Now I'd like to try kung-fu because it looks pretty awesome. Aikido is also an interesting martial art, apparently, because you learn to use your opponent's strength to counter their attacks. That must sound similar to judo but I swear it's very distinctive.

i must agree on u for the "defending" reason... well, i guess i'll stay... it's just a couple of belts away, huh... but nobody can calm me regarding the tournament thing... even not my friend... i must admit that i'm afraid of hitting my opponent hard when we are not going to use the protection pads... and usually we're not allow to use those... if we're going to wear that, that's another story...

and the fact that i'll always end up having to pair with someone not of my average... (my weight: 45 kg) my opponents would usually be, say, 50 kg and above... that's what scares me at the moment, for having to face the situation AGAIN!!

hopefully i'll be participating in a tournament or something in three months... got to boost that confidence and low self-esteem right?!!.... haha

I used to have your problem, but taekwondo is what helped, man, thats mest up. Dont be affraid to hurt people, it's game of tag, tag them, but with power so they fear you alittle bit, and wont run strait in with convindonce and own you. But hey, if you dont want to do tournaments, thats fine, like i say, they suck, you wait and wait then listent o some korian guy try to speak english, then wait, and wait, then fight, bam, it's over, then go home. They be no fun.

To quote Serif from Matrix: Reloaded "You never truly know someone until you fight them."

Which is so true, you never get the same look out of people when you're fighting aside from when you're sitting talking to them for 2 hours. The kind of message you get when their eyes read "KILL THAT MF'ER" cancels out every message in your head and let's you focus. It's so hard to explain...but it's so very true.

    Speaking of...

    That's a pathetic fight, though.

u have a freedom to "beat" ur opponent when he/she's not someone ur related to... but it's always hard to beat ur own friend when ur not using the protection pad... like, they r going to come at ya! after the fight... well, it's just a test... i guess we r suppose to gain the technique... in the process, getting to know the basic protection and fight as well... i dont want to beat her up just for getting good marks, i want to be able to use the technique so that in the future (if something ever happen to me - person to person combat!) i can use that despite the fact that i'm totally sucks in fight!!
