    OK...I need some help.

Johns Hopkins Universite chose me to take the SAT 1 early. I got a 530 on the Verbal section, so I qualify for a writing or humanitites course over the summer. Heres my problem: I can take it, sure, but the tuition is really expensive and it takes 6 weeks out of my summer vacation. Its like govenors school, I stay on the campus, my family can't visit, I can't go home, its like totally dedicated to learning from the course and meeting the other people there. I don't want to give up my summer vacation, and I don't want to spend that much time away from my family (not to mention the computer, LPA, and my friends), but this could be a really nice highlight to put on my application to college, since I want to go to a good one. Mleh, I don't know what to do. The cutoff date is February 14, and I need to let my parents know. What would you do and why?

Well, seeing that it is Johns Hopkins, I might take up the opportunity, seeing that it may give you that edge on your college app. Think about a few things though when you consider it... is this course going to give you a serious amount of college credit or is it just to increase your skill and the learning process? If it gives you credit, go for it. Also, is it a course that you could take anywhere else? If it is, and taking it somewhere else would be cheaper, then forget it... it's probably not worth it. Take everything into consideration though and think it over. Plus, it's just six weeks... who knows who you might meet or get a chance to do. Just don't do something that you will regret. If you truly don't want to do it, don't.

So basically, I probably just confused you...

Its like I want to, because I could have the chance to take latin or greek or a music class that would broaden my singing....but I don't know if I want my family to put out over $2,000 for something that I may never use because right now I have an idea but not a clear choice of what I want to do in life.

If by doing this you're going to be completely tortured and cut off from everyone and everything you love, do you think it's worth it? Personally, I always try to make my choices based on how happy I will be. If something will put me through hell for a couple of months and I think I'll regret it from the moment I did it, I wouldn't do it unless it was really important.

But, the positive side shines bright too. Doing something like this could give you the leg up on ANYONE for any job you're applying for. If by doing this early you think it'll help you dramatically in the future, by all means do it. It's whether you're willing to make sacrifices for it or not. It's only 6 weeks though, it may give you a new appreciation for everything in life that you missed. So by suffering, you may profit. You can do it during 6 weeks or wait a year, it's whether it's worth it or not to you when you evaluate all the possibilities. I know I'm thinking of moving to Toronto for University but I don't want to leave all my friends and family here. I need to think about whether I would enjoy it more by staying here in Newfoundland or going to Ontario. It's a very tough choice and you need to take all the time you can to look at everything in perspective.

This may not have guided you in any direction, but that was my point. You and only you should make this decision, you just need to know all the consequences and situations surrounding it. I wish you luck. :)

Mark said it better than I ever could, but here's a few more things I wanna throw around:

Thats a very hard decision. The question for you to ask yourself is: what is more important to you? I mean, you need to look into it more, talk to people. If this can give you a HUGE boost, this may be one of the best choices you'll ever make. On the other hand, if you think that after talking to people you think the negatives outweigh the advantages than you should consider not going.

Keep in mind: This is really depending on your age (how old are you?) but the natural thing to do when you get older is to leave your home and start your own life, this may be your first step towards independence, think of it that way.

The choice is yours, you know better than anyone else whats best for you, but I see this as a good oppurtunity! ^_^

I'm 13. Do you think a humanities course (no matter how BADLY I want to learn Latin or Greek...::drools::) will help me become a teacher or engineer though?

Think of it this way: Are your friends more important than what you can achieve for yourself in the future?

If something like this were to happen to me, I’d choose my friends over my future, simply because of the fact that I’m really lazy and I don’t want to do anything overly spectacular in the future. I’m really laid back, so something like a job in a big business isn’t right for me. I’d rather be in a band or a songwriter. However, if you want to do something worthwhile, such as work for a large corporation, then, by all means, take the course! It would greatly help your future and would look outstanding on your college application, because they would know that you are serious about going to college and things like that.

    :)

If I were you, I'd just stay home. Don't take my advice though cause I'm living off of welfare and disability checks.

I think you should give it a shot. I know it'll be tough at first, what with being away from family and friends, but this could open up a lot of doors for you. I would try it...you're just gonna have to hang in there if you go...just remember how much you'll gain from such a labour intensive course.

I just looked at the packet again...its nearly $3000 for 3 weeks of learning something like Latin. Its pratically paying for the name of going to the college for 3 weeks. I REALLY don't know if i'm going to do it now.
