Do you think they'll make another A Thousand Suns?

Most of us agree that ATS is their best album. I absolutely hated it at first but now it's my favourite of all time. LIVING THINGS didn't have as much surprises as ATS did. That first listen of ATS was amazing. Do you think they'll ever do something weird and different like it again?

    Mixed emotions?

But to answer your question, I hope so. It's good to see with the DJ collaborations that the band still loves doing something very different from what they have done before. So I'll be optimistic about the near future of LP.

To be fair I guess you can hate something and be amazed by it all at once.

To answer your question though, probably. LT only sold slightly faster than ATS and eventually didn't end up moving much more, so they might be convinced whatever audience they have left are just the one's that'll be there forever, so I can totally see them heading back to ATS terriroty. Albeit hopefully with a bit more of a clear endgame next time, though.

I'd love them too as well. I don't want every album like that (I love the simplicity and straightforwardness Living Things offered), but seeing how deep LP can actually delve into their creative side is amazing. It's something I really hope they do with the next album, which is why I don't care if the turnaround is longer than the one between ATS and LT.

Let's get this outta the way because someone's gonna bring it up. No, they should not make a straight up sequel or a direct continuation of ATS. For the most part, whenever people say they want more of what was on that album, they're talking about the mindset that went into creating it. That "fuck the label and expectations, we're gonna go bonkers" attitude. You cannot convince me that ATS was an obvious follow-up to MTM and that's what I love about it. I'd like for them to take more risks and make songs most people wouldn't expect from them. However, I'm not sure they'll do that given this stage in their career. They're at the point where most bands become creatively stagnant and churn out album after album of the same sound.

I'd rather them waste their "LT energy" on collabs and shit and save up the real energy for another ATS.

Most of us agree that ATS is their best album, I don't agree with that. I'm not saying it's a POS, but it's my least favorite album by the band out of the 5. Anyways, I don't think they will make another ATS. Why would they? They have said since 2007 that they don't want to make the same album twice (I think they realized how similar Meteora was to HT, thus sparked the idea of change with MTM). We could possibly get a new album someday in the same realm as ATS, artistically and stuff, but probably not the same exact sounding songs.

Yet again, this comes up. Another ATS would, by definition, sound nothing like ATS.

Maybe the concept you're that trying to explain shouldn't be referred to as "A Thousand Suns"

Spitz said it better than I did.
I'd say the concept I'm trying to explain can most easily be referred to as "A Thousand Suns," in regard to LP anyway.

I'd love another "A Thousand Suns" in the sense of its creativity and point of difference. I'll be honest, "Living Things" wasn't terribly great, probably because it was following up such a strong album, but I feel as though going for something different is better than going for something that works, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

Hard to say at this point... With ATS they've proved that they want to make different and challenging music that will make them relevant in music history (sorta), but with LT and "lets make a new album every 18 months" mindset, they're taking different path. But maybe they'll change that and make another crazy record...

Honestly, ATS have been idolized to a point where I can't stand the record anymore. Overrated records are overrated records.

Yes, I would like it if LP went the experimental road, but no, I'm not considering "ATS" a reference of that. Different but average-sounding doesn't interest me. [/rant]

I totally agree. A Thousand Suns is a very good album but people tend to over exaggerate entirely.

I wonder if ATS will be The Fragile of Linkin Park.

Well, both albums did sell pretty poorly. ;) I'm sure that "The Fragile" wasn't as divisive with the fanbase, though, back when it was released.

Let's also remember that the band, by most indications, didn't really have a good idea where they were going with ATS and seem to just be throwing things at the wall to see what stuck. Recall the bands nervous breakdown at the end of the companion DVD; that didn't look to me like a group of guys confident with what they were doing and how long they had to finish it.

I'd like to see another "just fuck it" album, but keep in mind that ATS was, in all likelihood, created in just as much desperation as it was "brilliant boundary transcending".

That was the point. The journey into unknown and experimenting.

If they make another ATS, is everyone going to jump down their throats and call them lazy?

It's possible. Depends on how they go about it.

Making a 35 minute album with VCVCBC in the first 6 songs, and then on 2 more after Phoenix saying precisely "VCVCBC is boring" in the ATS DVD is being lazy.
