http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/jul/12/spike-lee-confirmed-director-oldboy-remake Spike is kind of hit-or-miss for me, but regardless, please, Hollywood, enough with the fucking remakes. Especially remakes of movies I adore.
Oldboy doesn't need a remake. Most movies from Asia that are remade for the US don't. See: The Departed, The Ring, The Grudge, fucking Akira, Godzilla...
Thank fuck Akira's still in development hell. I'm not sure if I could deal with a raping of my childhood on that level.
Spike Lee doesn't cut it for me. I would've been excited if it were in the hands of someone like David Cronenberg.
How can we forget Na Hong-jin's "The Chaser" which has also been in the pipeline for an international remake. Oldboy is great the way it is, so are all the others. Leave them the fuck alone.
Back when the project was on Spielberg and Will Smith's hands it was supposed to be an adaptation of the graphic novel and not the film. Wonder how much different that is from the film and if that's the direction they're still going in.
Spielberg figured he should just leave well enough alone. Can't wait to see how Spike Lee will fuck this one up.
The following invisible text is a spoiler for Oldboy and possibly the remake by Spike Lee. HEY N****! YOU KNOW THAT FINE-ASS BITCH?! YOU HIT THAT ASS, RIGHT? HELL YEAH N****! WELL GUESS WHAT, MOTHERFUCKER? THAT TRICK'S YO BABY MAMA'S BABY YO! YOU JUST SCORED ON YO DAUGHTER HOMIE! WHATCHA THINK ABOUT THAT, SON?!
Maybe they'll have a more sensible ending in this version. That was my only "wtf is this shit" moment in Oldboy.
The last 20 minutes were amazing. How everything comes to a head, and the ambiguity of the ending made the movie for me.
Man the last 20 minutes were what made the movie The end scene where he's half smiling and half crying was just gut wrenching to watch! Too much.
And the awesome thing is, it wasn't your normal "OOOH SCARY" shock. It was a psychological shock that just makes you feel more repulsed over time. I remember my exact words the first time watching this movie. "No... no way. No. NO! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! OH MY FUCKING GOD WHY?! Holy shit that's fucked up. So fucked up. You are a monster! Fuck you! That's fucking horrible!" A few minutes later. "That's a fucking good movie."
You know an ending is good when it sticks with you for years. And not in the "goddamn, that was terrible" way, but the "I think I'm going to move far away from the rest of civilization and never stop showering" kind of way.
I was saying that too, only because nobody would ever do that to themselves when they are in shock like he was. It was just a bad ending. Everything leading up to the tongue part was reasonable. Then the movie jumped off the deep end.
Seriously. So, a man imprisoning some dude for 15 years because said dude caught him boinking his sister is reasonable?
