I've heard the general meaning and all: a band that moans and *itches about life in their songs. But isn't that just about all bands? Please give some examples, and is LP emo at all?

Emo is short for emotional, that's it.

Bands like Finch, for instance, are considered emo.

Blindside, while they're a hardcore punk band, they're defined as hardcore emo-punk.

And as far as I know, I've never heard any bitching and moaning on any of their songs. ;)

To me good bands come from the heart. They throw out all their Emotionals, letting their emotionals flow through the music. So, since most bands write from their emotions, than how is it right to cha-te-ra-lize only a few bands as Emo? I feel that Linkin Park are very emotional when it comes to their music. They pour out their feelings into their music. I don't really get Emo. :\

Yeah thats exactly what I mean. Almost all music out there is emotional. I guess only the extreme ones like dashboard confessional get labeled "emo".

A lot of punk sounding bands are considered emo. Just another brand to put on them...we can't just call it "rock".

I know. I am so sick of these strange genres. First emo now screamo. Since emo is short for emotional, shouldn't all music be considered emo if they put their emotions in their music?

emo is (supposedly) a sub-genre of punk. Nowadays bands throw together a bunch of genres so you can't really label a lot of them. I think true emo, though, has very poetic lyrics and is softer than "punk". A lot of people actually cry when listening to emo... which is why I suppose metalheads don't like emo kids that much. "Emo", I'm supposing, comes from the emotions the listener gets from the music.. which is usually sad/depressed. Please feel free to slap me if I'm wrong.

The label "emo", in my opinion, is bull.

It's supposed to stand for emotional, but, Arch Enemy are emotional, and they're metal. The Distillers are emotional, but everyone calls them punk. Korn are emotional, but people call them nu-metal or rap-metal. Hell, Nsync is emotional! I personally think that emo is just a hot name for lighter rock bands, a-la Dashboard Confessionals or Weezer.

**note that I'm not saying emo bands are bad. I love a lot of these so-called "emo" bands. I just think that it's sort of a fake genre.**

I think a good example of emo would be Further Seems Forever. I don't exactly consider them hard rock but they're not pop either. I guess there needs to be a middle ground for people who blend different types of music together. But so many labels can get a bit confusing.

LP are EMO in a way, because the lyrics are full of emotion.
Funeral For A Friend are SCREAMO
    Brand New are EMO
