I was listening to Linkin Park earlier, and it hit me. Why do they call him Phoenix and not just Dave? A couple of conflicting stories that I happen to have heard aside, I've never wondered or bothered asking why in 8 years. But now I have to know the truth, so I can die happy. Why is Phoenix called Phoenix?
It was confirmed at the Philly M&G that his name is Phoenix because of the fact he has a tattoo of a Phoenix bird on his back. That's the only reason .
The two stories I heard were the tattoo one, and one about how apparently one of their early fans just thought Dave Farrell was a boring name, so they jokingly gave him a nickname and it stuck. Unless the two cross over with each other.
WAT? He didn't have those tattoos prior to 2004. EDIT: maybe i've gone insane and he had those before, but I have never heard that used as the reason for like most of LP's career. That's the one I heard. And the name itself is a reference to that one movie, Mystery Men. A character there jokingly calls himself Phoenix Dark. ......where? I've never seen that anywhere.
I heard he got the name from an antique mirror his father left in the basement of their family home, which he found when he passed away.
