House of Wax (2005) has got to be at the top of my list, followed by the Grudge 2. :giantcock:

I try to do a lot of research before watching most horror movies. The Descent really disappointed me, despite all the praise for it. It was just cheesy and had few real scares.

I watched both Paranormal Activity movies online within the last 2 weeks. Both were way overhyped. They both had average concepts with pretty poor storylines.

Drag Me To Hell was a weird one. It's actually more of a comedy/horror, utilizing both elements, so it's hard to judge. I wouldn't call it scary, but it did a pretty decent job with what it was trying to do.

You really can't get horror these days that live up to the psychological horrors of the past. Everything today uses jump-scares to basically surprise people, not actually scare them with fear. The Thing is probably my favorite horror movie made. Pretty simple story that is executed to near perfection. No CGI, no gimmicks, nothing cheesy. It's not terribly scary, but it's about as good as you can do without showing tons of gore or jump-scare tactics.

Movies like Underworld and Resident Evil. They're in the Horror genre but are more action-oriented and never scary.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the 2003 remake. Once we got to the point where the hitchhiker pulls a Magnum out of her cooch and shoots herself, none of us could take the movie seriously. I mean, come on. She was wearing a spring dress. Where else would she be concealing a weapon?

Pretty much any horror movie produced in Hollywood in the past 10-15 years.

Indie and foreign films are where it's at.

There are a few exceptions, I'm sure. But, generally speaking, I don't care for big studio horror flicks. Sorry, brah.

Yes. I haven't been scared of a Hollywood horror flick since Shadows of the Empire was being released on book and N64.

And at that age, it's easy to be scared.

Any of the recent Friday the 13th movies. Those things are so over the top that they're not scary anymore.

people are always talking about how freaky and shit Paranormal Activity and it's sequel is. But, in reality, it's not. Unless you're just a HUGE wimp.

watch "Antichrist" and get back to me.

Any of the Jeeper Creepers films at first I found scary and then they turned to comedies when I grew up more.

The Japanese know how to make good horror movies. I remember being freaked out by Ju-On, which later was adapted into that crappy American remake The Grudge.

The Ju-On Series is really great. The Japanese do know how to make good movies, even with cheap ass budgets. That said I still have to say that I haven't; been afraid of a horror movie since I was a little child when I saw, I think it was The Candy Man II. Since then I've haven't found any frightening at all. Now, I can recognize when there are things that are creepy or disturbing but they don't scare me. It's just like a head-nod where I can go, "I guess I can see why people might be afraid of this"

Horror is my favorite movie genre, though I don't get scared, so why? You might ask. Well, because I'm a fucked up guy that likes to study why people are afraid and what gets into peoples minds, really, it's my interest of the mind and psychology that makes me so fond of horror movies and thrillers. Even though most of them suck, The Thing is good, The Shining is good, Ichi The Killer is good, The Ring series is good, (Japanese, American is uh.. I'll just leave it at "uh") Rec is good, Suicide Circle is good, The Happening is good (Up for debate, yeah I know! But it's mildly creepy. Nature fights back, bi-otch) Let the Right One in is good, Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara is good, Shutter ain't bad either, Battle Royale is good (number one, number two is the most fucked up suck fest that I ever....) Really, I could go on and on and on (and on and on and on) but I'm sure you're all stabbing your eyes out right now. So I'll sum it all up for you, over half of the movies I listed are Japanese movies. And it's because they get you where Hollywood doesn't, the brain. Watch them, and be my zombies.

Word up. [REC] goes beyond the horror genre imo. One of my fav films of all time.

And to answer the original post, I think the horror genre is quite varied. There is a whole sub-genre which is dedicated to the fun/campy/b-movie type stuff. I don't think anyone should consider them to be legit horror films.

Antichrist. Just watched it last night. I was too annoyed with the movie trying to shove all that symbolism and artsy stuff in my face, which made sense and was decent, it was just way overdone. The dialogue was also way drawn out.

And I forgot to list Martyrs before. Half of people hate it and the other half praise it. I was somewhere in between, but it was pretty ridiculous. Maybe the weirdest storyline you'll ever see in a horror movie. And not a good weird. The pacing is terrible. It was somewhat scary. I don't even know what else to say about it.
