So I'm a big fan of (early) Sevendust and I recently picked up a little Living Colour and fell in love with the song Type. I'm looking for a metal band that makes use of the same sort of soulful, earthy vocals of Lajon Witherspoon (from Sevendust's first five albums), while still keeping that edge. I tried God Forbid last year but I felt they were a little too heavy on the metal end, not enough on the soulful end.

Basically, I'm looking for "soul" metal. If anyone understands what I'm trying to say, and knows someone out there that sounds like that, I'm open to any and all recommendations.

For the sort of sound I'm getting at here:

Well, if we are going that route, Killswitch Engage would be under that category

I mean yeah, but I've found in some such cases like God Forbid, that that "soulfulness" is missing, maybe as a consequence of trying to sound more metal. I'm trying to find a band that makes that a part of their sound rather than trying to downplay it.

Listen to Skindred then. They are a great mix of ragga and metal.

Sounds intriguing. Any suggestions as to a good place to start?

Also in the case of Killswitch Engage, I'm guessing they're more parts metal?

hmm, its kind of hard to choose between Skindred tracks, I would just listen to anything from their album Babylon.

Skindred is really all over the place musically (in a good way). They've got elements of punk, reggae, thrash, nu metal, and funk all mixed together.

Killswitch Engage wouldn't fit in to what you're looking for at all, they're a metal/hardcore type band with a lot of screaming vocals. They just happen to be a metal band with a black lead vocalist.

I'd say some Faith No More might be close to what you're describing. They've got a lot of funk-influenced stuff in the same vein as Red Hot Chili Peppers, but they tend to be considerably heavier than RHCP. King's X is another band that would be worth looking into.

Every Time I Die are probably a decent bet. Try their last two albums.
