What song took you by surprise the most?. Something you didn't expect?. For me it was Blackout. Chester rapping was a surprise. I first heard it from the LPTV episode and I expected it to be guitar and bass heavy but I was shocked when I first heard it. It was so dancy and filled with electronic melodies. I hated it but now it's one of my favourites of all times. Mike's part was completely unexpected and I love it.
UPDATE: Honestly. Looking back now. The Catalyst was the most surprising. It takes the cake for me as well. Blackout was still a shocker though

For me, nothing comes close to that initial listen and confused reaction to The Catalyst.

Blackout and When They Come For Me were close but after listening to The Catalyst I tried to expect the unexpected. Skin To Bone/Roads Untraveled/Until It Breaks all get honourable mentions as well.

Nothing really surprised me on the first two records. But I have to say that Hands Held High and The Little Things Give You Away really surprised me from Minutes To Midnight, I thought those songs were amazing and I never thought that LP could make music like that. Pretty much all of A Thousand Suns surprised me, I thought When They Come For Me, The Catalyst and The Messenger were all really cool and extremely different for LP. Very unique sounding songs and record. On LIVING THINGS, I think ROADS UNTRAVELED and UNTIL IT BREAKS really surprised me, the folkiness of Roads Untraveled was what surprised me, and Brad's singing on UNTIL IT BREAKS really fucking surprised me. All in all though, Minutes To Midnight surprised me the most because it was the first huge change and evolution for the band, plus it had really different sounding music, while ATS was different but more like a theme.

Until It Breaks - the first time I heard it, I laughed so hard at Mike's voice, and I thought: ''This can't be Linkin Park!'', but, it grew on me, and I really like it.

Agreeing with the above comments, when the catalyst came out as a single, I got it on release day took it to my broadcasting school and listened to it through the board, if you will. I was fucking speechless. One of my classmates who was a fan at the time (yeah, she's one of those fans) came into the studio and said "What's that?" I told her the new single and she was stunned as well. So I think the catalyst will forever take the cake. Simply due to the timing and previous albums.

The Catalyst was ridiculous at first. I couldn't form an opinion on it. It was so weird. It just polarized me

I was bewildered by the snippets we had been given to form our "own remixes"

I thought the snippets were gonna make for one awful song.

By the time the MOH trailer had rolled around, and we had a decent chunk of the song, I knew it'd be a favorite of mine.

This. Minutes to Midnight is sketchy on a song by song basis, but then they manage to actually pull off the socially-aware stadium rock they'd been attempting throughout the whole album. It's graceful and haunting and effortless, a song that's so good it makes you stop and think, "No way this is Linkin Park."

Oh Until It Breaks- It drove me insane when I translated it into Chinese. ><It's the most difficult one to interpret in LT. I really don't know what "Little Monkey" means. Sorry for that! Anyway, it's done.

ATS: Robot Boy in a bad way. The Catalyst when it came out as the first single, in a good way this time.

:p But now it is digested. Do not hate it more, but I do not think it's a great song. It's something listenable. Just IMO.
