Lately I've been getting into horror films more and more.
Please recommend me some good ones. I generally like ones with good plots, and something fresh from the director camera angle/look/visual feel-wise.

Preferably not ghost stories unless they're interesting.

well....it may be to late but they did a thing called 8 Films to Die For. These are all horror movies made that never aired theater and i'm guessing never made it to DVD release. They show like 3 a day or something. You can try to catch them, but it could be to late.

Some of my recent favorite horror flicks have been Audition and perhaps Old Boy. Both of them aren't really horror like American horror slashers or anything, but do justice quite nicely. More or less they toy with you psychologically throughout until the end and often leave you baffled about what you just saw. I also saw a straight-to-DVD movie called Dead End a while back. Although the story is a bit weird, I found it to be rather enjoyable.

You won't really get "fresh" with horror movies. "Fresh" in the horror business is "weird" to the general public... That is, if you're talking about modern day fresh-ness. If you're looking for directors that have really pushed the bar for the horror genre in general, Takashi Miike is your best bet. He's directed movies such as Audition and less horror driven movies like Ichi the Killer. All his movies feel "fresh" in the sense you rarely see techniques and nicely executed, violent vibrancy that you rarely see in cinema today. Usually these days, the most "fresh" you'll get is the upping of the gore factor, lol.

As Tekkiji said, there's the Eight Movies to Die For special, but it would be hard to catch since it was only available to see this weekend. I haven't seen them, but if they're being praised as too extreme for theatrical release, they must be doing something right. Then again, that could just mean there's just too much gore to be taken out to give it an "R" rating. I think they're out on DVD, but you'll probably have to do some research to find them.

edit: Hell, if you want "different"... Rob Zombie has definitely made a few "different" far from cookie-cutter horror flicks of recent times.

I watched The Amityville Horror a couple hours ago and it was really good.

Ignore the fact that Ryan Reynolds is in it.

I thought Ryan Reynolds was really good in that movie.

Oh, that's not what I meant. He played a great role, and I wish he'd play more serious roles like that. But if you're used to him being the funny man around the screen, then the movie's going to be really hard for you to take serious. That's all I meant. I loved the movie and his part.

I'm a big Horror movie fan actualy, I recommend all of these films:

Nightmare On Elm Street 1,2 & 3 (Not any of the others lol)
    All Halloween films except 3
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (The original 1970s version)
    Silent Hill
    The Shining
    IT
    American Werewolf In London
    The Others
    The Lost Boys
    Vampires
    Bram Stoker's Dracula
Dawn Of The Dead (2004 version)
    Freddy vs. Jason
    Friday the 13th Parts 1-6
The Hand That Rocks The Cradle
    Psycho
    The Exorcist
    The Evil Dead
The Omen (original, DO NOT watch any of the sequals, you'll want to shoot your TV)
    The Candyman
    Alien
    Predator
Children Of The Corn Parts 1-3
The Amityville Horror (Both 2005 version and original)

Isn't it funny that a lot of the good horror films were made pre-1990's/2000? It's like after we hit the year 2000, horror fell on its back and didn't care this time.

James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead [2004], Slither) is a great writer, though. I like his stuff so far.

Oh yeah, and if you're looking for a bloody-bloody movie... So bloody it's funny, check out Dead Alive. It's one of Peter Jackson's (yes, THE Peter Jackson) first movies he directed and it's insane. I don't know if you could call it a horror flick, but it has zombies.

That's because writers just keep re-scripting old horror movies instead of coming up with new ideas.

Shaun Of The Dead (not that scary, if at all, but it has a horror theme and it's worth watching if you haven't already, and it's very well-directed)
    Dog Soldiers
    Pet Sematary
    Alien and Aliens

I don't know if it qualifies as horror, but Silent Hill is fucking great.

Dog Soldiers and Pet Semetary are awesome films but I thought the plotlines were quite weak. Also here's a little fact, Shaun Of The Dead was filmed about a mile and a half away from where I live and the road that I used to live on. A fucking hilarious film too.

    @Test:

Silent Hill is indeed a horror and I agree that it is fucking ace.

Peeping Tom is pretty good if you're into Hitchcock-style horror films.

Pet Sematary doesn't have the greatest plot, but there are worse. Dog Soldiers' is pretty much standard horror fare, but it does it well and it is indeed an awesome film.

The Hills Have Eyes (remake) was pretty great.

Haven't seen the original one but I bet that it's just as great or even better.

That and Bad Taste are some of the only good Peter Jackson movies.

    Se7en is a damn good movie. It's horror/thriller.
