I'm completely shocked about what just happened. DT was one of my favorite bands and also one of my biggest inspirations. I can't picture DT releasing an album without Mike Portnoy. Good luck, Mike Portnoy. I wish you the best. :((

I'm going to laugh my ass off if he throws his career and skills away by becoming the full time drummer for Avenged Sevenfold. I'm not a big Dream Theater fan either, but... jesus christ. Talk about a step down.

Woah, didn't see this one coming. Agreed with everyone else, if he goes from Dream Theater to A7X... yikes.

At least DT fans won't have to put up with his vocals anymore.

DT really aren't that great anymore, I can understand him leaving them. But with all this "After having had such amazing experiences playing with blah blah blah" you'd think he'd still do the Steven Wilson, Mikael Akerfeldt project. Which makes me kind of think his plan for a while is to play with A7X, pretend to be a rock star, play shitty 4/4 rock beats, fuck bitchez, get moneyz midlife crisis sort of thing. Probably can tell I'm not a massive fan of him haha.

This caught me totally off guard. I don't think they'll replace him, and if they do, they'll probably put some imitator.

I see them reuniting in the future though, after Mike makes some money with A7X.

Shocking news. Dream Theater without Portnoy? I can't even imagine that. But I just can't understand the decision. A7X are a fine band, but if I were to choose between A7X and Dream Theater I would go for the latter without even thinking about it. Good luck to him anyway.

I never got the big fuss about Dream Theater. I fully respect their talents, but I'm so sick and tired of hearing how they're so much better than everything else out there, musically. They are extremely talented. But it simply isn't always pleasing to the ears, which is all that matters to me.

People can bitch and moan about his leaving all they want. But to imply he's going to suddenly become less "skilled" because he joins Avenged Sevenfold (if he does) is absolutely absurd.
