XFM Give Impressions on New LP Album

Considering everything I've mentioned already about Metallica's release of DM is strongly running parallel to this new LP record, late September/early October is looking very likely.


For the record, some people here seem to be associating the word "prog" with "mellow", and I like to echo Derek in saying prog music falls under a very broad umbrella.

Yeah, I looked back at some of the things they said about the songs from MTM and quite a bit of it seemed to be things like "I think this is one of the best songs we've written" and "This song will make a really good single", nothing really objective that turned out to be wrong like, say, "This song is precisely 4 minutes and 17.34 seconds long, and features digeridoo played by Rolf Harris."

 

I'm really growing tired of the whole "It's going to sound like the guitars from this band and the drums from that band" crap. How about we all agree on the fact that it's going to sound like LINKIN PARK, and leave it at that? Comparing them to other bands and hoping it sounds like something else is not only degrading what the band is trying to do for themselves, but it's also setting yourself up for disappointment when you first hear it and it's not what was expected.

Of course, this is just my opinion.

Yeah, I remember reading a review of "What I've Done" on some website (I think it was Stereogum) where the writer described the song as a mix of ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead and Blink 182. Can't say I agree with that assessment.

That's a really, really uninformed statement.

 

I've been trying to live, but where ever I go, I still have the hopes that when I get back home...I'll see a real message from Mike, but every time I get back it's always the same BS. If you weren't going to give us the message, than don't say it!!

The quality of Floyd's music will never be matched by Linkin Park's imo... And as far as sounding like Pink Floyd goes, it's been done to death.

There has also been the ongoing argument for years about Prog in sound vs. Prog in composition. As in, is Prog a genre that is defined by the technicality, strange time signatures, improvisation etc. or is Prog Rock defined by the sound of early bands like King Crimson, Genesis, Yes etc. Which related in that, it's kind of hard to tell whether the interviewer means Linkin Park are making technical, intricate compositions, or if they're just sounding like any classic Prog.

Also, COMPLETELY off-topic, but Rush (wankfest) and Genesis are such overrated Prog bands. Listen to some fucking King Crimson everyone. Yes and ELP are also the shit.
