    Okay, so this problem is driving me insane. I've googled it and I've read just about every solution for this and tried it. I recently got a new basic PC because my old one decided to stop working, and everything works fine. However, I seem to be receiving no sound through my speakers at all when plugged into the Line Out (green jack). I have updated my drivers, just about every Realtek driver I can find numerous times. It appears I'm running a Realtek AC'97 VIA Audio Controller. My speakers are stereo 2.1 and I'm running Windows XP SP2.

    Although, for some reason (and this is the crazy part) when I plug my speakers into the Line In (Blue Jack) at the back, and set my speaker set up to quad / 5.1 (4 or more) I can get sound, but only through Windows Media Player, VLC, Skype and any other desktop application. However, I receive no sound on the internet at all - no Flash videos, nothing. It also seems I get no sound from Windows, like shutdown and login sounds, mouse clicks, error messages, nothing. So I just get sound on the media players when set to 4 or more, when I'm running on 2.1. I get no sound through the green jack at all and I don't get it.

    Other people seem to have had this problem too and wondered if any of you guys have and how you resolved it. Even if you haven't any suggestion would help. Here's what I've tried so far:

    - Device Manager - Un-Install / Rollback Driver / Re-Install (there's no yellow error marks next to my hardware)
    - Changing the Registry with recommended fixes
    - Downloading K-Lite Codec Fixes
    - Changing Internet Browser (same result for Chrome / Firefox / Explorer)
    - Making sure I've turned on "play audio in browser" settings.
    - De-installing Flash and Re-Installing.
    - All the simple things like, connection and making sure everything is plugged in and working.

    Thanks in advance to any help you can give or suggest.

    Not trying to sound like one of those tech support people who tell you everything you already knew but have you tried going to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and then configuring the volume levels through there to make sure "Line Out" is turned up all the way?

    I know the way Vista/XP does volume control is VERY basic, and not at all the way it used to be with 2000/ME which was way better. You literally have to go through control panel to change the volume of certain devices.

    Yeah, I've been through all of that and still no luck. I'm considering a re-install of Windows, which I'm trying to avoid as it's a lot of hassle when I've just got back up and running again.

    Have you tried:

    1. Shutting/Powering down the PC.
    2. Unplugging all wires/connections to the computer
    3. Taking the computer over to a well-cooled area, preferably near a window.
    4. Opening said window and removing all screens from the window.
    5. Pushing PC tower out window onto hard ground below.
    6. Heading downstairs with a baseball bat.
    7. Opening front door and heading around to where PC has landed.
    8. Hitting PC repeatedly with baseball bat.
    9. Getting in your car and driving to a nearby Apple store

    Win :lol:

    if it's a new PC why not take it back to the place you bought it? Sound should be working out of the box.

    Word.

    Yeah, it's not that straight forward. My Dad bought it for me from back home to tie me over until I get a new one myself. I was just going to take all the components out my other one and put them into this one and so on. So I can't really without too much hassle. I might just have to re-install Windows or at least repair it from disk, but that's back home too. Blah. Why does shit never work out the way you want, haha.

    Have you tried reinstalling flash, or does your browser have a self mute? Does internet video sound (get it?) work when you use only a green jack? Specifically, headphones only? Do you have two green line in jacks connected?

    ... How I fixed mine was a Miracle. It was ages ago, and I don't remember how I fixed it. :/ You sure everything you plugged in is proper and connected ok?

    Hey. Yeah, tried re-installing flash a number of times. I've checked all my browser settings however I think it's nothing to do with my browser as I'm not getting Windows sounds either. I get no sound at all when I use the green jack. I have to use the blue jack, and set my speaker settings to quad (even though I only have 2.1) to even get media player sound.

    I've given up at this point, nothing works at all. I think I've done everything besides re-install Windows now.

    Re-install it. That's what I do when nothing else works and I feel like doing what Derek suggested.

    I've had issues with Realtek drivers before. On my old computer, it got to the point that trying to reinstall the drivers brought me to a BSoD. I don't have a solution for you though, since that was the primary reason I decided to build a new computer in the first place. Just stopping by to say I feel your pain. Fuck Realtek.

    Just thought I'd let you know I solved this problem a couple of week back and thought I'd post how I did it in case anyone else reading this has the same problem.

    I had no jumpers attached to my mother board where the sound card section was located. there should be five jumper slots layed out like this:

    :::.:

    On my new PC there were no jumpers, so I took them off my old PC and put them onto pins 3 & 5 so they looked like this:

    ::|.|

    After this I magically had sound. so if anyone has tried all the software fixes and nothing has worked, look to the bottom of your mother board and see if you're missing jumpers on the pins. Hope this helps someone as it was so annoying for me.
