As promised last week in his official blog, Mike Shinoda has posted the results of the first band meeting of 2010, along with some very interesting information concerning the band's musical direction.

"One funny thing came to mind as I was writing this: the term "genre busting" seems to keep coming up when talking about this album. In fact, if you Google "genre busting," the first thing you get is a link to an interview with me about this new music. If you read the piece, you'll see the following:

Linkin Park co-frontman Mike Shinoda says the band’s fourth studio album is going to be so unique, “they’re going to have to come up with a new genre name for what this record is.”

This offhanded comment was meant to be a bit of a joke. Most people don't take it as lightly as I meant it; because of that, part of me regretted saying it. But recently, there's a voice in the back of my head saying: Why not really make that the bar? "So unique that they'll have to make a new genre name." I don't know if we'll ever be able to hit that mark, but we might as well give it a shot."

Sucks he didn't post working titles of those tracks. But I understand why he did that.

I wonder if those pics hanging on those consoles are inspirational art or part of the album art they're working on.

I was wondering the same thing. If it's album art, then Mike is right when he says the new album art will be some of the best and most interesting the band has ever done.

I wish he'd stop talking. He's going to hype this so much and end up with something far from what he talked about and piss everyone off.

he knows too darn well that it might not meet expectations but at least their trying. Apart from "genre busting" theres relitivly not much else we know about the album at all. Would you rather have absolutly no news at all?

Annnnyway, I can totally see where Mike's coming from with the working titles. I can see so many Fans freaking out about all the names etc with hundreds of torrents called "LEAKED NEW LP SONGS!!" >_<

Are you getting mad because I'm expressing an opinion in the designated opinion expressing section? Because you know, that'd be pretty stupid of you.

Honestly, if someone is thinking Mike is hyping or overhyping the new album with those updates, he / she is bound to be disappointed. If anything, guys are excited about the music they're making. That's all. If someone can't tell a difference between that and hyping, well, that's their problem with hype management. And seriously, Mike is hyping anything with his Studio Updates? I must be missing something because to me it's just a cool insight into the writing process.

Where do you see him being mad? In using the word "darn"?
I think he's just right. We don't know much (if anything) about how it will sound and now Mike just explained that "genre busting" is not to be taken in a literal way. He learned to be very diplomatic in giving his bits of news: He doesn't give much away that could leave the fans disappointed anymore, but he knows that most of the fans want at least some news, thus he tells us about the state of things happening at that time. I find this the best solution.

But of course I respect your opinion.

well guys, you 've missed the point..
no matter how much you disagree, you'll never find out how "genre busting" this album is until it is finally out.
so, we should focus on the fact that the boys are doing their best to give us some quality music and they're trying to do this without taking them so long again.
I hope that the album is gonna be out by Autumn.

If people don't want to be disappointed they could start by, y'know, not taking things the band says the wrong way and setting their expectations out of proportion accordingly. He seems to be trying to quell that sort of reaction here as much as anything else, and unless I've missed anything the gist of what they've said so far is "This album won't sound like our others and we think it's good"

Is he supposed to apologise for the mere mention of trying to set the bar high? Would you rather he said "Everything that's coming out of these sessions is utter shite and anything good that ends up on the album will be a bonus"?

You know, if you guys just took it for what it is, and had some patience, I don't think we'd all start getting defensive about one another's opinions. It's merely a statement. He's not intending to stir hype, he's just giving info because fans like info. You know, like a good guy who wants to keep people informed.

Is there really anything so complicated about that?

    Ha people's over-reactions are always a delight.

I'm excited! But honestly, just don't let your hopes go through the freakin' roof and you'll love anything they come out with. :)
Keep up the good work guys!!
